Following the previous teaser, Kia officially unveiled the Concept Pv5 e-commerce concept car based on the Platform Beyond Vehicle module at CES 2024, and also debuted the Concept Pv5 derivative model, Concept Pv7 and Concept Pv1 commercial concept cars, and Kia also announced that the Concept Pv5 commercial concept car will be launched in 2025 The company will build a dedicated PBV manufacturing plant in Autoland, Hwaseong, South Korea, with an estimated annual production capacity of 150,000 units.
Kia said that the most important feature of the new PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) module is the use of special Easy Swap technology to meet the diverse needs of customers for commercial vehicles, and a single vehicle chassis can meet multiple usage settings. Through a fixed cockpit or driving area, various interchangeable rear cabins can be connected to the base vehicle through hybrid electromagnetic and mechanical coupling technology, turning the PBV into a taxi for use during the day, a delivery van for the night, and a personal leisure vehicle for the weekend. The manufacturer also emphasized that the PBV module adopts a dynamic hybrid seamless steel tube structure with a body structure, which further realizes the possibility of modular body switching, and can adjust the length and cargo space of the rear cabin according to demand, and reduce the number of parts used in traditional vehicles by up to 55%.
Kia is also launching a pure electric vehicle with a PBV module in two phases, with the first step being the launch of a PV5 production model in 2025 with a variety of models, including a basic model, a cargo model, a high-roof model, and a chassis cab base model. In the future, Kia also plans to launch a Robotaxi model developed with Motional, a joint venture between HMG and Aptiv, that will provide passengers with a revolutionary robotaxi experience.
In the second phase, Kia will launch the PV7 and PV1 production models, of which the Pv7 pure electric car will have the largest storage space, the longest driving range and enhanced vehicle functions, while the most compact PV1 pure electric car will focus on flexible body handling and short-distance logistics transportation, even in narrow alleys, it can easily transport goods through four-wheel in-place steering, improving the convenience of cargo loading.
