According to the German news network on December 25, Ukraine has spent Christmas in a state of fighting with Russia for the second time in a row, and this holiday is also a milestone - in many Orthodox countries, people usually celebrate Christmas on January 7.
According to the report, several years ago, December 25 became an official holiday in Ukraine. Over the years, a preference for this date has been seen, especially in larger cities.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has accelerated this trend. As a result, the Ukrainian parliament has removed January 7 from the list of official holidays. Ukraine's most influential Orthodox Church has previously decided to celebrate Christmas on December 25. Thus, for the first time in the festive holidays from the end of 2023 to the beginning of 2024, Christmas is officially celebrated only on December 25 in Ukraine.
But in everyday life, there are still people who celebrate Christmas on January 7. However, this segment has again dropped significantly. According to the survey, more than 60% of Ukrainians explicitly chose December 25. Before February 24, 2022, the situation was completely different – only 18% of people celebrated Christmas only on December 25.
In addition, New Year's Day is still a more important holiday in Ukraine than Christmas. But there will be no real gatherings in Ukraine this year: curfews are in place in all regions of Ukraine except Carpathian, and Chinese New Year's Eve is no exception. (Compiled by Mei Pengpeng).
