According to the German weekly Der Spiegel on December 25, in southern Switzerland, many measuring stations recorded the highest temperature on record on Christmas Eve. Some of these stations have been in operation for more than 100 years, including Lugano, in the canton of Ticino, on the border with Italy, according to the German-language Swiss radio and television company Mettology. According to data from the Swiss Meteorological Service, the temperature measured at the station on Christmas Eve (December 24) was 171 degree Celsius. On December 23, the temperature even reached 213 degrees Celsius.
According to the measurements, the Christmas Eve temperature in Graubünden also reached a new record, with Piskiavo, for example, reaching 156 degrees Celsius. At an altitude of more than 2,100 meters above sea level, the temperature reached 89 degrees Celsius.
In Germany, widespread thaws usually occur between December 22 and 28. In Switzerland, thaws tend to come earlier. This year, 10 days before Christmas, the weather was already warm. According to statistics, there is a 70% chance that Germany will thaw at Christmas. In Switzerland, there has not been a year since 2010 that this warm weather phenomenon has not occurred.
