Zhongshan 2nd Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, Sun Yat-sen Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (hereinafter referred to as "Zhongshan First Hospital") stand side by side. Walking north, crossing the road, you will arrive at Zhixin Middle School, which was also founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
Since he was a child, Xiao Haipeng has lived in an area of one square kilometer around "Zhongshan Medicine". He was a student of Zhixin Middle School and Sun Yat-sen Medical College, and is now the executive vice president of Sun Yat-sen University and the dean of Sun Yat-sen First Hospital.
Mr. Sun Yat-sen proposed to 'dare to be the first in the world'. Xiao Haipeng said that it is with this spirit that Guangdong has blazed a new trail in the reform and opening up, and he himself has been deeply influenced by this spirit, daring to dare to think and dare to do.
In the 45 years of reform and opening up, Xiao Haipeng has witnessed great changes in the medical and health industry in Guangdong and even the whole country. Looking to the future, he has a more ambitious goal - to attract global medical talents to gather in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area with a high-level platform to jointly overcome medical problems and provide a solid guarantee for a healthy China.

From the stethoscope to the Da Vinci robot.
In 1988, Xiao Haipeng graduated from Sun Yat-sen Medical University (now Sun Yat-sen Medical College) and entered the First Sun Yat-sen Hospital. At that time, doctors could "walk the world" with a stethoscope. Today, the advanced da Vinci surgical robot has become the "standard" of the First Hospital of Sun Yat-sen. In Xiao Haipeng's eyes, the great changes in the medical and health industry brought about by reform and opening up can be called a miracle.
Nanfang**: You were born and raised in Guangzhou. Has reform and opening up had an impact on your life?
Xiao Haipeng: The spirit of daring to be the first and the courage to dare to think and dare to do have allowed Guangdong to break a new path in the reform and opening up, and also opened up the pattern of my life. With the reform and opening up, we can grow into today's doctors, professors, deans, and presidents. In this process, I have also witnessed the great achievements of Guangdong's medical industry and health reform in the past few decades.
At present, the average life expectancy in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, where I live, is 85 years old, reaching the level of developed countries in Europe and the United States, which is precisely the great achievements made in the medical and health industry. It is a miracle that it took us more than 40 years to achieve what developed countries in Europe and the United States took hundreds of years to achieve.
Nanfang**: What has changed in the First Courtyard of Zhongshan in the past few decades?
Xiao Haipeng: Zhongshan medicine is the birthplace of Western medicine in China, and it is the place where Sun Yat-sen studied medicine, and it has a very good tradition. I graduated from university in 1988 and joined the First Zhongshan Hospital, which was already very famous at that time.
But at that time, there were only 700 medical staff in the entire hospital, a few small buildings, and the electric lighting in the building could be done with a few light tubes, so there was no advanced equipment. From the hardware point of view, it may not even be as good as the current district-level hospitals and county-level hospitals. However, the doctors at that time created very good results under such difficult conditions and cultivated a large number of outstanding talents.
At present, there are almost 10,000 staff members in the First Hospital of Zhongshan to support the operation of the hospital, and the total construction area of several hospitals is nearly 1 million square meters, which has increased dozens of times compared with the original.
At present, there are advanced medical equipment in the world, and our hospital also has it. In particular, we have 6 of the da Vinci surgical robots. We have also innovated many unique technologies, such as non-ischemic organ transplantation. In the past, the most common "** in the hands of doctors was the stethoscope, but now in the First Hospital of Sun Yat-sen, patients can basically enjoy the world's top medical services.
South**: What do you think about such a change?
Xiao Haipeng: When I first started working, I couldn't have imagined that in a few decades, our hospital would be like this. Many diseases that had no hope at that time can now be cured, and the progress is obvious.
From the perspective of the development of the entire medical and health industry, in just 45 years, we have basically achieved universal medical insurance, and medical technology innovation achievements have sprung up like mushrooms after a rain, and the achievements are obvious to all. Reform and opening up is the root cause of these achievements in our country.
Reform is the primary driving force for development, and only reform can lead to development. Innovation is the main driving force for the development of medical science, and human beings rely on innovation to progress. If you want to do it, do something that no one else has done;If you want to go, take a path that no one else has taken. At that time, we said that we wanted to break out of a "blood road" and create a "blood road" of our own. Our medical career has been able to achieve such achievements thanks to our courage to think and do, and dare to be the first.
Create the Greater Bay Area in 30 minutes.
Medical treatment circle.
Innovation is the driving force of development. Focusing on the current demand for medical services, Xiao Haipeng put forward a new concept - to make high-quality medical resources in place more quickly and accessible by building a three-dimensional emergency response and treatment system on land, sea and air in the Greater Bay Area.
Nanfang**: I just mentioned that "innovation is the main driving force for the development of all medical sciences", how does the First Sun Yat-sen Hospital innovate?
Xiao Haipeng: We are building a world-class science and technology innovation center - precision medicine science center. Focusing on the six major directions of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, tumors, infections, inflammation and immunity, data science and artificial intelligence, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, we will build six major platforms for basic and translational research, interdisciplinary (medical-engineering integration) research, medical big data and artificial intelligence research, clinical research, public health research, and laboratory animals, so as to overcome the world-recognized medical difficulties such as pancreatic cancer, strive to produce original and subversive research results, and promote the transformation of achievements.
In addition, we also propose to build a 30-minute medical treatment circle in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to truly realize the rescue of acute and critical diseases within the first time.
South**: How to achieve a 30-minute medical treatment circle?
Xiao Haipeng: Take Hong Kong as an example, although they have high-quality medical care and the cost of public hospitals is low, patients have a long waiting time for medical treatment, and some diseases cannot wait.
We have built a three-dimensional emergency response and treatment system on land, sea and air in the Greater Bay Area, and laid out the layout in the Nansha Campus of the First Hospital of Sun Yat-sen. Nansha is the geometric center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and it takes half an hour to reach Hong Kong and Macau.
At present, the Nansha campus has built 2 aprons, equipped with first aid, and it takes 15 minutes to fly to Hong Kong or Macau, which is very attractive to Hong Kong and Macao residents. In the event of a health emergency, our *** can fly over for transport and treatment.
In addition to this, we have creatively designed a mobile ICU, which will be put into use around May next year. This is an ICU established on the car, equipped with the most advanced intensive care and treatment equipment, such as ECMO, etc., which can realize emergency treatment anytime and anywhere, and will also help build a 30-minute medical treatment circle in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the future, there will be an emergency dock in the Nansha campus.
South**: What led you to these innovative ideas?
Xiao Haipeng: With the reform and opening up, our medical and health undertakings have made remarkable achievements, but there is still a long way to go to meet the health needs of more than 1.4 billion people, so that ordinary people can see, afford, and treat well, so that everyone can receive high-quality medical services.
We need to continue to deepen reform and continue to innovate. How can high-quality medical resources really sink to the people, and how can they be put in place more quickly and more accessible, I think the main reason is to change from patients "seeking medical treatment" to hospitals "sending doctors to their homes". On the one hand, it is necessary to improve the construction of network hospitals, so that doctors can see doctors at any time and anywhereOn the other hand, it is necessary to establish a home hospital care system, so that patients can also receive high-quality tertiary care from Zhongshan First Hospital at home, which can not only save patients' costs, but also allow patients to get better psychological support and eat better at home, and also reduce the risk of cross-infection in hospitals.
Gather global wisdom to overcome health problems.
Xiao Haipeng pointed out that the direction of further reform and opening up in the medical and health field should be to continue to deepen international cooperation, gather global wisdom and global strength, overcome human health problems, promote the high-quality development of medical and health services, and provide better medical services for the public.
Nanfang**: What is your view on further deepening the reform of medical and health services?
Xiao Haipeng: At a time when countries around the world are more connected than ever, the global health sector still faces many common challenges. Infectious diseases threaten human life, environmental pollution and climate change have brought about many new public health problems, chronic diseases such as tumors, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and metabolism are high, and the aging process of the global population is accelerating.
As a well-known and high-level hospital, the First Hospital of Sun Yat-sen shoulders the important mission of building a world-class medical center and promoting the continuous progress and development of the entire medical industry. Through international cooperation, the implementation of the high-quality development strategy of hospitals with innovation and talents as the core is the only way for us to cope with these challenges and effectively solve these global medical problems.
South**: How to deepen international cooperation?
Xiao Haipeng: Throughout the 45 years of reform and opening up, China's international cooperation in the field of medical and health care has achieved a historic leap from scratch and from weak to strong, forming an all-round, multi-field and multi-level international cooperation situation.
Our hospital has deepened cooperation with more than 60 top universities and medical institutions around the world, and through platforms and projects, we have brought together medical talents from all over the world in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, especially the Nansha campus.
For example, our hospital and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom jointly established the "International Institute of Healthy Ageing".Jointly established the first "Joint Laboratory of Precision Medicine Engineering" in China with Nanyang Technological University, SingaporeIt has carried out in-depth cooperation with Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital-Brigham Medical System (MGB) in all-round and multi-level specialty construction, talent training and scientific research, with a total of 18 cooperative specialties, more than 250 Harvard experts, more than 3,000 medical experts and medical students participating. Preparations are also underway for the establishment of a surgical center and an oncology research center. There are also many top international scholars who have participated in the development of the First Sun Yat-sen Institute as external professors.
Nanfang**: What are your prospects for the development of the medical industry in the Greater Bay Area?
Xiao Haipeng: My ideal is that in the future, people from different countries, different skin colors, different races, and experts in different fields will work together to solve the major problems facing human health in the scientific research building of Nansha Campus.
Guangdong is at the forefront of reform and opening up. We really hope that through international cooperation, the Nansha campus will become an important emergency medical rescue carrier and a big scientific platform for scientific and technological innovation of the National Medical Center, and also make the system of Zhongshan Medical University a highland of medical science and technology innovation and talents, and a demonstration and leading place for the development of medical and health undertakings. We are confident that we have the ability to do a good job and provide people with more accessible, homogeneous and equitable medical services.
