A forest, a tower, a person, a lifetime. In the Baili Forest Farm in the southern mountains of Lingtai County, Lao Yang has been on duty for 40 years. 
Lao Yang is a ranger at Baili Forest Farm in Lingtai County, named Yang Zhijia, 59 years old this year. In 1984, when he graduated from junior high school and just turned 21 years old, he "took over" from his father and became a forest ranger in Baili Forest Farm in Lingtai County. Since then, he has been walking about 15 kilometers along the mountain road almost every day. "There are no less than 5 pairs of rubber shoes that are worn out in a year. Yang Zhijia said. 
For 40 years, Yang Zhijia never left his hand with a long-handled chopping axe. He said it was possible to deal with dangerous animals in the forest and to clear the shrubs and weeds that blocked the trail. Every day in the mountains, of course, there are a lot of dangers, inevitably bruises, snake bites, bee stings. There are many snakes in summer, and when patrolling the mountains, the legs and feet must always be smeared with realgar to drive snakes, even so, Yang Zhijia was bitten by a snake once. 
The conditions in the mountains are bitter. There is no electricity in the watchtower, and solar panels are used to generate electricity at night. But on cloudy days, there is often no electricity, and at night you have to light up the diesel lights. The diesel lamp is smoky, and there are often black circles on the face. Food supplies have also been a problem. During the fire prevention period from November 1 to May 31 of the following year, the watchtower cannot be separated from people, so it can only go down the mountain to buy some when the fire risk is reduced in rain and snow, and then carry it to the mountain step by step. Usually do not go down the mountain, but when the forest farm personnel go up the mountain to check, they send food to the watchtower every once in a while. 
Yang Zhijia vividly remembers that in February 2011, the mountain was covered by heavy snowfall, and the water reserves were quickly used up. For a whole month, I drank water after the snow melted, and ate potatoes for a meal. Even more unbearable than these is the loneliness in the mountains. "Patrolling the mountains and forests during the day, it's easy to get through the busyness;Can't watch TV at night without signal. At this time, Yang Zhijia could only listen to the radio and read books to pass the time. 
The hardest was the decade of the last century. Yang Zhijia recalled that at that time, timber was needed to build houses and build furniture in rural areas, and individual villagers in the vicinity set their sights on forest farms. Whenever there was a case of stealing trees, they had to go from house to house, sometimes waiting in the mountains for a night or two until the person who had stolen the trees was caught. "At that time, it was common to fight guerrilla fights with them, to be insulted and even threatened by them. As he spoke, he said again, "But these years have been good, and I almost don't see anyone stealing trees!."”
Protecting greenery is also planting greenery. In addition to the non-fire prevention period and patrols, the rangers also undertake the work of greening and replanting. Every year, Yang Zhijia participates in tree planting with the staff of the forest farm. He said that he planted no less than 1,000 seedlings in spring and autumn a year, and after careful calculations, he has planted at least 30,000 seedlings since joining the work.
In the past 40 years, Yang Zhi's family has lived and eaten in the mountains half of the time. But deep down in his heart, home is a deep concern and responsibility. Although my home is only a 3-hour walk from the watchtower on the mountain, I have the impression that I have not spent the Spring Festival with my family for 10 years. After so many years, the most unbearable thing for Yang Zhi's family is his wife. The old father was seriously ill, and she was filial piety at the bedside;The two sons were raised by her;A few acres of land at home are planted in spring and harvested in autumn by herself. "My wife was injured in an accident, resulting in a comminuted fracture, and she stayed in the hospital for more than a month, and she did not accompany her once, so she could only spend money to accompany someone to accompany her in bed. Yang Zhijia said that there was no way to be sad, and he didn't want to go back even if he went home during the fire prevention period, for fear that something would go wrong if he was negligent for a while.
Take the mountain as your home and treat the tree as a baby. The mountains and ravines have imprinted his footprints, and the vast forests and seas have poured his affectionate ......Next year, Lao Yang will retire, but in every mountain forest in Pingliang, there are still countless footprints of "Lao Yang", who are paying their true feelings and labor for that piece of green.
