In the latest vote of the UN Security Council on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the US veto once again aroused strong opposition from the international community. Although the draft proposed by the United Arab Emirates was supported by more than 100 countries, it was not adopted because of the opposition of the United States. Why did the United States veto the ceasefire resolution? Why does China criticize the United States for "hypocrisy"?How do countries perceive the U.S. decision?
On December 8, the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian issue, at which Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and doing everything possible to end the suffering of the people of Gaza.
At the meeting, the UAE submitted a draft resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, which was supported by more than 100 countries, including China, and the Security Council voted on the draft on the afternoon of 8 July.
Before the vote, Russia's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Polyansky, strongly criticized the position of the United States. He pointed out that the Security Council had long failed to fulfil its responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security because of the "intransient, selfish and destructive position" of the United States.
Polyansky bluntly pointed out that during the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the partiality of the United States hindered the normal intervention of the Security Council and excluded the participation of other countries within the framework of so-called "quiet diplomacy". He warned the United States that if they continue to block demands for an immediate ceasefire, they will not be able to explain it to the thousands of people affected.
Sure enough, the actions of the United States in the vote further confirmed Polyansky's "prediction". U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Wood cast the only negative vote in the ballot. According to the United States, the reason they do not support the draft resolution is that it is "unbalanced", "detached from reality" and "dangerous".
Wood noted that almost all of the U.S. proposals made during the drafting process were ignored, resulting in a final draft that was out of touch with reality.
The US veto directly led to the Security Council's inability to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel, which aroused widespread dissatisfaction in the international community.
After the U.S. veto, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Zhang Jun, sharply criticized the U.S. behavior. Ambassador Zhang Jun said that China is "extremely disappointed and regretful" that the United States vetoed the draft.
Zhang Jun bluntly said that the US behavior reflects extreme hypocrisy, on the one hand, it condones the continuation of the war, and on the other hand, it claims to care about the safety of civilian lives and humanitarian needs. He pointed out that such double standards are not only self-contradictory, but also ignore the strong call of the international community for the early restoration of peace between Palestine and Israel.
According to Xinhua News Agency, 17,000 Palestinians have been killed and 46,000 injured as of December 7, most of them women, children and the elderly.
In addition to death, hunger has become the biggest obstacle to the survival of refugees, and it has been revealed that many children in the current Gaza Strip can only eat one meal a day, and even 10 people can only get one box of canned food.
In the face of such a humanitarian crisis, the United States remains indifferent and has prevented the adoption of the draft resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire. Faced with this situation, even its allies no longer choose to stand on the same side as the United States. A number of countries, including France and Japan, have expressed deep regret over the failure to adopt the resolution.
There was also a small tidbit at the meeting: when the Palestinian representative spoke, US Deputy Representative Wood was "intently" playing with his mobile phone, and for a time criticism such as "indifference" and "rudeness" poured in.
And on the same day that the ceasefire resolution was vetoed, Biden urged Congress to approve a bill on providing Israel with 4The proposal of 50,000 shells, which is likely to continue to add fuel to the fire, is by no means the behavior of a responsible power.
