Brussels, 14 December 2023 - The European Union's accession criteria have always been quite strict, while Ukraine and Moldova do not currently meet them, according to Russia's press secretary Dmitry Peskov. Peskov said the Kremlin was closely following the accession talks between the two countries and the European Union.
EU Council President Charles Michel announced at the EU summit in Brussels, Belgium, that the EU has decided to launch accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova and to list Georgia as a candidate country for the EU. However, the EU's accession criteria have always been quite strict, and Peskov noted that neither Ukraine nor Moldova currently appears to have met these criteria.
While the EU's openness offers a glimmer of hope for Ukraine and Moldova, the remaining funds in Ukraine's treasury are no longer enough to use in the next three months, leaving Ukraine with the serious problem of bankruptcy by March 1 next year.
