Gu Desheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pioneer and founder of the field of continuous mining of metal deposits in China, and professor of Central South University, passed away in Changsha, Hunan Province on November 26, 2023 at the age of 87 due to ineffective medical treatment.

Born in Meizhou City, Guangdong Province in October 1937, Gu Desheng graduated from Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (now Central South University) in 1960, and stayed on to teach, successively serving as lecturer, associate professor, professor and doctoral supervisor, and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.
As a well-known expert in mining engineering science and technology in China, Goodsheng is the founder of China's vibration ore extraction technology and underground mine continuous mining technology. He invented China's first bump-type vibrating mining machine, successfully developed 11 kinds of multi-functional new vibration equipment, innovated 6 mining methods, and invented 7 new mining processes, promoting China's mining technology into a new period of development.
In view of the problems of high efficiency and low efficiency of ore falling in the mining method developed in the 80s of the 20th century, Goodson put forward a scientific proposition to realize the continuous process of underground metal ore stopes. In 1986, "Research on Underground Mine Continuous Mining Technology and Equipment" was listed as a national research project.
In the nearly five years from the beginning of the project to the completion of the project in 1990, Gu Desheng visited the Lion Rock Mine in Tongling, Anhui Province more than 20 times, each time lasting as little as a week and as much as a month, and the mine became his second "home".
When I went down the well in the morning, it was not yet dawn, and when I came out of the well at night, it was already full of stars. When it comes to the hardships of the scientific research process, he always understates it, but in the face of the scientific research results, he is full of smiles and pride.
After more than two years of trial, improvement and perfection, the vibrating continuous operation unit developed by Goodsheng's team has made the stope ore output lump degree from the initial 03 meters raised to 11 meter, stope production capacity also set a new record, reaching 1,643 tons per hour. The project of "Research on Underground Mine Continuous Mining Technology and Equipment" also won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1992. In addition, the projects he presided over and participated in have also won 3 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 third prize of the National Technological Invention Award, as well as a series of honors such as the Ho Liang Ho Li Science and Technology Progress Award and the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award.
For more than 60 years, Goodson has deeply integrated his life into the development and construction of China's mining industry, and has made great contributions to scientific research and talent training.
