On November 24, local time, Drake Chauvin, a former white police officer in the United States who was convicted of killing George Floyd, an African-American man, was seriously stabbed and seriously injured in the federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, where he was serving his sentence. According to the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed on December 1 local time, Chauvin was stabbed by an inmate in the same prison - 52-year-old John Teska.
Texkar allegedly stabbed Chauvin 22 times in a row, saying he chose Nov. 24 (the first day after Thanksgiving, "Black Friday") to rekindle attention to the Black Lives Matter movement. He has now been charged with four counts: attempt, with intent, with dangerous wounding, and causing grievous bodily harm, with the first two counts carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and the latter two counts carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment. John Tesca is a member of a Mexican gang who was sentenced to 30 years in prison in the 90s and will expire in 2026, according to the United States.
On May 25, 2020, Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis, was arrested on suspicion of using counterfeit banknotes by four police officers including Chauvin, who rushed after receiving a tip. Chauvin, assisted by two other police officers, knelt on Floyd's neck for nine and a half minutes. During this time, Freud pleaded repeatedly, saying "I can't breathe." But Chauvin and the others did not stop, and Floyd eventually died. Floyd's death has sparked a wave of indiscriminate violence against American police and systemic racism in American society across the United States and around the world. On April 20, 2021, the verdict in the case was pronounced in Minneapolis, and the jury found Chauvin guilty of all three counts, including ** and manslaughter. On June 25 of the same year, Chauvin was sentenced to 270 months, or 22 years and 6 months. In July 2022, Chauvin was sentenced by federal court to 21 years in prison on charges of violating Floyd's citizenship.
Chauvin is currently in stable condition in the hospital.
