Autumn and Winter Check-in Challenge
A legacy for posterity.
The revenge** plan had a very limited impact on the outcome of the war. Of the 10,000 V1s fired at the UK, more than 3,000 failed to ignite or crashed halfway through, and 4,000 were intercepted by British troops;Only 2,500 of the remaining ones made it to London, but none of them hit Tower Bridge.
In the German V1 offensive against Britain, more than 6,000 people were killed, 40,000 wounded and 20,000 houses destroyedAnother 3,000 people were killed and 7,000 injured in the V2 attack on London. On the other hand, the German bombardment of Britain day and night from 1940 to 1941 resulted in 40,000 dead and 46,000 wounded.
Although the British army was completely powerless to stop V2, the morale of the British never collapsed. The Allied victory in the land battle on the European continent clearly determined the outcome of the war, and the British people were willing to continue to hold out until the Allies achieved final victory.
The damage inflicted by Revenge** was not unbearable, but attacks on Antwerp and other Allied supply bases on the European continent were not accurate or durable enough to prevent the Allied armies preparing to invade Germany from gathering the supplies they needed.
The enormous human, material and scientific resources that Germany had invested in the revenge** plan were in vain. Hitler's dream of using Germany's scientific and technological superiority to defeat the enemy in one fell swoop proved to be a delusion, and it was Germany's enemies who finally realized this dream.
In February 1944, when Braun and his colleagues in Penemünde began to evacuate the center to an area of Germany that might be occupied by American rather than Soviet, they were already thinking about a postwar way out;Within months of Germany's surrender, Braun and nearly 500 German rocket experts had left for the United States to help build the first American rockets that would eventually land humans on the moon. Because they were of considerable value to the United States, they were able to escape the fate of being prosecuted as war criminals.
