The name of Qujialing Management Area has undergone three evolutions of Yijialing, Wusan Farm and Qujialing, and it is also a true portrayal of its transformation from scratch, from small to large, from farm enterprises to administrative divisions.

At the beginning of 1952, the Hubei Provincial Party Committee decided to establish farms in a large barren area east of the Han River and west of Yanmen on the border between Jingshan, Zhongxiang and Tianmen to develop production and ensure supply. On November 17 of that year, Zhou Jifang, the first director of the field, led the first batch of site builders to march into the wasteland and began to set up the field department in Panjiatai. At that time, it was rainy and rainy, and the flood control situation of the Han River was severe. After every rain, the field site will be surrounded by water, so the field manager decided to choose a high ground close to the Hanyi Highway as the field site, and chose the place "Yijialing".

According to the old man in the early days of the construction of the farm, at that time, the middle of the place was high, and all around it was barren thatch, reeds and thorn trees, and there was no place name, only a family surnamed Yi built a thatched shed on the side of the road, opened a small shop, and operated daily necessities. Therefore, according to the actual situation of only one farmer surnamed Yi here, people named this place "Yijialing", and some people also called "Yijialing". Since then, on the territory of the People's Republic of China, the place name "Yijialing" was born, which is also the place where Wusan Farm (Qujialing Management Area) is stationed.

At the beginning of the preparation of Wusan Farm, the name was called "State-owned Shayang Machinery Farm", which was easily confused with the adjacent "State-owned Shayang Farm", and it was easy to be misunderstood as a part of Shayang Farm, so everyone in the farm asked for a new name at that time. Although the farm was built in the winter of 1952, the official start of reclamation construction was on October 22, 1953, so the decision-makers changed its name to "State-owned Wusan Machinery Farm" in combination with the year name of that year. For the sake of simplicity and memorization, people simplified the farm to "Wusan Farm" until 1956, when it was officially named "State-owned Wusan Farm".

As for the origin of the "May Third Farm," some veteran comrades also put forward another theory, that is, it is related to the local topography. From 1952 to 1956, the Hubei Provincial Water Conservancy Bureau and the Agricultural Bureau, together with experts from the Central South Institute of Geology, conducted several all-round surveys of the topography, landforms, mountains and rivers of the farm and its surroundings, and learned that the farm was between "five mountains and three rivers". The "five mountains" are Taizi Mountain, Daji Mountain, Qingshi Mountain, Yagu Mountain, and Jinshan; The "three waters" are the Tianmen River, the Sima River, and the Qingmu River.

Qujialing Management Area is a dispatched agency of the people of Jingmen City, which was established in 2001 with the approval of the People's Government of Jingmen City with county-level administrative functions. Its naming is closely related to the well-known "Qujialing Cultural Site" at home and abroad. Qujialing site is located in Qujialing Village, about 5 kilometers northwest of the district, with an area of 600,000 square meters, which is a cultural relic of the late Neolithic period, about 5,000 years ago, and is listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. In 1956, the Hubei Provincial Archaeological Team organized excavations and unearthed a large number of pottery, textiles, polished stone tools and carbonized grains.

This major discovery made the Qujialing culture the earliest named primitive culture in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and was recognized by the society. In order to promote the history and culture and improve the popularity of the place, when applying to the province and the province for the establishment of the district, the decision-makers considered using the cultural brand of "Qujialing" and it was recognized. In this way, on the territory of the People's Republic of China, the youngest administrative region of Qujialing Administrative District has appeared.
