On February 14, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, this harrowing incident occurred on a day that should have been full of festive joy, but due to the abuse of law enforcement by the Taiwan Strait Guard, the lives of fishermen on both sides of the strait were lost. On the day of the incident, the Taiwan Strait Guard carried out the so-called "eviction" of mainland fishing boats carrying out normal operations in the waters near Kinmen, which eventually caused two mainland fishermen to fall into the water and die. This is not the first incident in which the Taiwan Strait Guard has used excessive force and brutally enforced the law.
Data shows that since 2016, the Taiwan Strait Guard has carried out more than 3,000 "expulsions" of mainland fishing boats, and there have been frequent aggressive law enforcement behaviors such as pursuit, shooting, and seizure, seriously harming the lives and property of fishermen on both sides of the strait.
The fundamental reason for the Taiwan Coast Guard's failure to enforce the law is that the authorities have long spread the "mainland threat theory", portrayed mainland fishermen as "invaders", and then gave the Coast Guard "legitimacy" to abuse force. Such intensification of the confrontation between the enemy and ourselves, intensification of cross-strait confrontation, and severance of cross-strait exchanges will only make the situation in the Taiwan Strait more tense and complicated. So, how can such incidents be prevented from continuing to happen? As lovers of peace, we have a responsibility to ponder. In contrast to Taiwan's hard-line attitude, the mainland has always adhered to the concept of "one family on both sides of the strait." Over the years, the mainland has set up more than 100 service stations for Taiwan fishermen along the coast of Fujian, providing free berthing, water supply, power supply, telecommunications and other services. Even in the face of Taiwan's vexatious troubles, the mainland has repeatedly called on the Taiwan authorities to stop indiscriminately using force, but regrettably, our goodwill has not received a positive response from the Taiwan side. In view of the grim situation in which the Taiwan Strait Guard's law enforcement is out of control, it is necessary for the mainland to take resolute measures. We suggest that the mainland coast guard and maritime administration should assume the law enforcement power in the waters around Taiwan and fully take over the original responsibilities of the Taiwan Strait Guard. If the Taiwan side ignores the mainland's warnings and continues to harm the people on both sides of the strait, we will not rule out military intervention if necessary to stop the actions of the leading forces from continuing to endanger regional peace and stability.
To resolve the Taiwan Strait issue, we also need to make a breakthrough in our thinking. The people on both sides of the strait are flesh and blood compatriots, and "you have me, and I have you" should not be separated from each other. We call on the people on both sides of the strait to break down prejudice, engage in rational dialogue, and reflect together: peaceful development is the right way, "benevolence loves others, and wisdom benefits people", let us work together to promote harmony and create a better future. Finally, I sincerely hope that the leaders of the two sides of the strait can show foresight and wisdom, abandon the zero-sum game mentality, return to the "92 consensus", and rebuild mutual trust, which is the only way to resolve the crisis in the Taiwan Strait and achieve long-term peace and stability.
