On December 26, 1936, after the peaceful settlement of the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang sent Chiang Kai-shek back to Nanjing. However, in Nanjing, Chiang Kai-shek and Dai Li, after conspiring, decided to imprison Zhang Xueliang.
On December 27, Zhang Xueliang was arranged to live in Song Ziwen's mansion, and although he went out to visit guests that day and moved freely, he was always followed by two spy vehicles, and he was not aware of his imminent imprisonment.
Zhang Xueliang received a notice that he was going to the National Military Committee on the morning of December 28 to hold a meeting, however, on the morning of the 28th, he entered the Military Committee alone, while the others were waiting outside.
After about half an hour, the gendarmerie confiscated the ** of Zhang Xueliang's entourage. After another 2 hours, Zhang Xueliang came out of the Military Commission in frustration and got into the car without saying a word.
It is said that he learned that he was not going to a meeting, but was "interrogated" and arrested by a military court after entering the military commission.
After Zhang Xueliang came out of the Military Commission, he was arranged to Kong Xiangxi Mansion, and then transferred to Wuling School and Xuedou Mountain, until he was transferred to Huangshan in Anhui Province in the winter of 1937, and then lived in Xiaojia, Pingxiang, Chenzhou, Suxianling, Fenghuang Mountain, Youzhushu Town Primary School, Yuanling Phoenix Mountain, Xiuwenyang Mingdong, Guiyang Qianling Mountain Qilin Cave, Kaiyang County Liu Yuxiang and Tongzi County.
During this time, he was kept under close surveillance, not allowed to go outside, and living conditions were poor. In the winter of 1944, he was moved to Taiwan and has since left the mainland.
