Communication is an important way to interact with people. Behind language and written expression is thinking and cognition. With the development of online media, relying on buzzwords and emojis can "express one's heart directly", but this kind of plain and direct output method has gradually forgotten some complex and profound expressions. When it comes to leaving the online environment and needing to standardize expression, some young people are left with shriveled words and stumbling language. Recently, a survey by the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily showed that more than half of the young people surveyed felt that their language and writing skills had declined in recent years, 471% of the young people surveyed feel that they lack vocabulary and are monolithic. Why is there a phenomenon of "word poverty" among young people? How to enrich your language and make the expression of "obstruction" smooth? The reporter of China Youth Daily and China Youth Network interviewed a number of young people and experts in related fields to jointly improve this issue.
Let me tell you a few words. At a family gathering during the Spring Festival, Li Sichao, a post-00 generation, became the focus of his family's attention. His family has a large number of people, and they get together every Chinese New Year to create a lively atmosphere. When he was named to speak, Li Sichao felt that his brain was a little "short-circuited", although he had a lot to say, but he didn't say a complete sentence after talking for a long time.
Li Sichao's case is not unique. During this year's Spring Festival, posts on social platforms such as "What are the words to express blessings" and "How to say it when greeting the New Year seems to be new" attracted a lot of attention. I don't know what to say when visiting relatives and friends, and I have to copy and paste the New Year's greeting information......Many young people feel that they are "running out of words".
The decline in the language and writing skills of some young people reflects the real problem of 'text aphasia' in the Internet era. Zheng Huanzhao, associate professor of the Department of Chinese at Jinan University, believes that while Internet technology makes life more convenient, it also has a deep impact on people's way of thinking, values and expressions, and the problem of "word poverty" among young people should be paid attention to.
Recently, the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily jointly responded to the questionnaire network (wenjuancom) published a survey of 1,333 young people, showing that 533% of the young people surveyed feel that their language and writing skills have declined in recent years. More than half of the young people surveyed believe that low reading and reliance on online language and emojis are the main reasons for "word poverty".
Nearly half of the young people surveyed felt that they lacked vocabulary and expressed themselves singlely
Li Sichao was a graduate student at a university in Nanjing, and he often had to make reports during his time at the school. Every time he reports, what gives him a headache is the teacher's questioning session, "Sometimes the words are on the lips, but I don't know how to say them, I stumble, and I don't seem to have enough confidence."
Zhang Ran, a post-95 generation in Beijing, was deeply impressed by his first report after work. Although she made serious preparations, when she spoke, her "brain was blank" for a while, and it was difficult to express her ideas completely, "There were many fragmentary words in her head, but they could not be connected to complete sentences, and she was 'stuck' several times." This made Zhang Ran realize that writing and speaking are completely different things, and it is not easy to express fluently.
I have encountered a situation where I forgot to write a pen, and I suddenly couldn't remember how to write the words that I could write, so I had to ask for help from the Internet. Liu Yuan, a post-90s generation who works in Hangzhou, feels that his language expression ability is not only declining, but also his writing ability. At work, he occasionally has to submit a manuscript, which makes him feel more difficult, and it often takes a lot of work to complete.
The survey showed that 533% of the young people surveyed feel that their language and writing skills have declined in recent years. 47.1% of the young people surveyed felt that they lacked vocabulary and expressed themselves singlely, 432% of the young people surveyed said they used a pen to write less, 415% of the young people surveyed have encountered a situation where they do not have the meaning of words and have difficulty expressing their ideas accurately.
Wang Yufei, a post-00s generation in Hefei, feels that Internet buzzwords have become an important online social language. "When I talk to my friends, everyone likes to use memes and internet buzzwords, and if someone posts a large paragraph of text, it will seem strange. She feels that fragmented expressions can enliven the atmosphere, and Internet language is like a kind of "code" to a certain extent, and catching the "stalk" represents "I understand you", which can quickly shorten the distance between each other. "But if you talk like this offline, it will inevitably make people feel embarrassed. ”
The survey showed that 379% of the young people surveyed have forgotten to write a pen, 350% of the young people surveyed found it difficult to write. Others: the logic of expression is rather confusing (34.).9%), often using internet language (311%), relying too much on memes (228%), becoming lazier to express (141%), etc.
"At its root, linguistic poverty is caused by mental poverty".
Nowadays, mobile phones have become a part of life, and everyone is becoming more and more accustomed to communicating online, and basically typing, expressing affection, and typing ** are very rare, and the opportunities for speaking and communicating are decreasing. Liu Yuan thinks that the Internet has changed the original way of speaking and writing, and the input method has also simplified the output of words, such as a poem, which used to need to be memorized completely, but now as long as the first few words are typed, the whole sentence will appear. "While Internet technology brings convenience to people, it also makes people lazy to remember and think. ”
Wang Yufei usually communicates with friends, "there are often various emojis in the group, and even by emojis, you can understand the meaning of others." But Wang Yufei feels that over-reliance on online communication will make offline communication difficult, and she doesn't like to talk very much on the occasion, worrying that she can't "withdraw" if she says the wrong thing.
As for the reasons for the phenomenon of "word poverty", the survey shows that the number of readings and the weakening of expression ability rank first, with a selection rate of 540%, followed by an over-reliance on online language and memes, and a lack of creativity (53.)0%), fragmented browsing information, difficult to form a system thinking (521%), and the selection rate is more than half.
Zhang Ran found that after work, his social circle became smaller and smaller, and the number of offline meetings with friends became less, "everyone is usually busy, and it is difficult to make appointments."
When it comes to the problem of "word poverty", Zhang Ran feels that he doesn't know how to express it, but he doesn't want to express it more and more, "Now there are fewer and fewer people who can communicate in depth, and gradually my desire to share has declined.
The reason for the "word poverty" is also that there is less offline face-to-face communication (476%), short, flat and fast" prevailed (344%), the fast-paced life makes it difficult to calm down and think (331%), the desire to communicate with people decreases, and they do not want to express (176%)。
Cheng believes that some young people feel lonely and "socially afraid" in real life, which makes them more inclined to choose virtual socializing. Internet memes and other online language symbols have become a common social language for young people, which is one of the ways for them to gain cultural identity and expression. However, this method has had an impact on normative, logical and written expressions, further affecting the way of thinking behind language expression, and also affecting the depth and breadth of young people's spiritual world to a certain extent. "At its root, linguistic poverty is caused by mental poverty".”
Language is the spiritual home of mankind. It is not only an important part of a nation's cultural genes, but also the foundation of a nation's cultural cohesion. Zheng Huanzhao believes that the problem of "wanting to say but poor words" will have an impact on traditional culture, lead to the simplification and roughness of individual ways of thinking, and will also have a negative impact on the collective national culture, and the intergenerational cultural separation brought about by the stratification of online language symbols will weaken the cohesion of collective culture to a certain extent.
How to regain your "expressive skills".
After that not-so-smooth work report, Zhang Ran began to consciously exercise his expression skills. Before each presentation, she would practice several times until she was completely smooth. "I usually read some work-related books to accumulate professional knowledge, so that I will be more professional and confident in my expression. ”
Li Sichao feels that written language is very different from spoken expression, and it is an important ability to communicate more while strengthening reading, so that others can understand.
In the age of the internet, it's important to think independently. Liu Yuan believes that a lot of information is forgotten after reading it, mainly because there is no in-depth thinking and thinking, and this is often an important step in digesting and absorbing information. In daily life, Liu Yuan pays more attention to social and people's livelihood news, and will take the initiative to collect information when encountering hot events, understand the causes and consequences of events, enhance critical thinking, and express rationally.
Participating in offline social networking can help improve your expression skills. Wang Yufei feels that when communicating face-to-face, on the one hand, we must listen to each other's words and feel each other's emotions, and on the other hand, we must mobilize our own experience and knowledge, organize our language, and respond to each other.
Survey shows that the response to "word poverty", 584% of the young people surveyed believe that reading should be strengthened to improve their personal literacy, 575% of the young people surveyed suggested focusing on independent thinking and logical thinking skills training, 557% of the young people surveyed believe that it is necessary to break the habit of obtaining information in a fragmented and fast-food manner. Others: Participate in offline face-to-face communication and exercise expression skills (469%), focusing on national expression education and improving expression skills (395%), dialectically looking at and using internet buzzwords (203%)。
To help young people get out of the 'word poverty' dilemma, we need to start by improving the Internet language environment. Zheng Huanzhao believes that on the one hand, it is necessary to strengthen the construction of high-quality online content, especially the accuracy, richness and beauty of language and writing, and create new classics of online humanities with high-quality content; On the other hand, it is necessary to guide all kinds of Internet ** to standardize language expression, and assume the responsibility of cultural guidance and aesthetic guidance, such as creating high-quality language learning social software and programs. In addition, schools and families should pay more attention to the recitation of humanistic classics among young people, and strengthen the training of the younger generation in language expression and thinking.
To solve the problem of 'word poverty' of the younger generation, it is also necessary to change their online living habits. Zheng Huanzhao suggested that relevant departments should help young people reduce their dependence on virtual environments, and encourage young people to participate in more offline activities and get more concrete life experiences.
Among the respondents in this survey, 14 are post-00s1%, and the post-95 generation accounts for 210%, post-90s accounted for 407%, 85 accounted for 149%, and the post-80s generation accounted for 93%。13 per cent and 8 per cent in high school and secondary vocational schools8 per cent, and 25 for junior college and higher vocational education7%, and 617%, and 25%。
