In the world of fashion, few brands are as dazzling and memorable as Gucci. From Alessandro Michele's sleek and extreme designs to the advertising of the Tom Ford era, Gucci has always been synonymous with glamour and luxury.
However, when the likes of Harry Styles and Dakota Johnson were not yet on the show, the Italian luxury brand's path to growth was full of ups and downs – in 2021 it was led by Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto The film "House of Gucci" brings this history to life (despite the fictional nature of the plot to the displeasure of the Gucci family and Tom Ford).
In 1921, Gucci opened its first boutique in Florence, Italy, marking the birth of the legendary fashion house. According to Rebag, Guccio worked as a doorman at the Savoy Hotel in London before founding his eponymous label. Drawing inspiration from hotel guests, he returned to his hometown to work for the Franzi luggage company and immersed himself in the art of leather. Gucci's original intention was to sell leather goods, especially travel goods, but with the favor of the British aristocracy, the brand gradually expanded into the field of equestrian equipment. Gucci's story is legendary, showing how a brand from the grassroots can become a shining star in the fashion industry.
In the 30s and 40s of the 20th century, Gucci made a name for itself with its innovative use of non-traditional materials. The addition of Guccio's sons – Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo – added to the company's reputation. However, in 1935, Gucci faced a serious challenge. The League of Nations imposed an embargo on Italy, resulting in a severe shortage of leather**, and Gucci was forced to look for alternative materials.
It was against this backdrop that a specially woven ** (canapa) was born, a material that would later become one of Gucci's hallmarks. And Gucci's famous staggered diamond logo is printed on this ** material.
Fast forward to 1951 when Gucci launched their first handbag, which not only embodies Gucci's unique use of materials, but also embodies the unique craftsmanship of the Gucci family. The appearance of this handbag marks another leap forward in Gucci's design and establishes Gucci's strong position in the luxury market.
