Western-style gardens, also known as geometric gardens, originated in ancient Greece and Rome, when gardens were mainly used to display power and wealth. As a result, gardens at that time were usually dominated by large buildings, sculptures and fountains, with plants only appearing as a background. By the Renaissance, the focus of garden design gradually shifted to plants and nature. But even so, the plants are still carefully pruned and arranged in Western-style gardens to show order and geometric beauty. It rejects the romanticism of medieval gardens and uses rigorous compositional and geometric principles to create a regular and orderly landscape.
