"Silence in a Quiet Place - Wu Didi Solo Exhibition" was recently held at the Asia Art Center. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of artist Wu Didi at the Asia Art Center, and the first solo exhibition in three years after the solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 2019 and the solo exhibition in Guangzhou in 2020. The exhibition presents five series of works by artist Wu Didi, namely "Bamboo", "Rattan", "Moss Stone", "Dreamland" and "Geometric Landscape".

In "The First Dream of All My Dreams", the artist uses silk, cotton and other soft fabrics to create the image of birds, and uses thread and wire to entangle and bind these birds. "Birds are closer to people and closer to people's lives. ”

The first dream of all my dreams No1 (side) The artist's grandmother is a tailor, and the happiest thing she did when she was a child was to buy cloth with her mother, and the soft materials such as flowers, silk, and towels fit together with **, which is very warm. The artist describes it, "It was a particularly happy state of searching." "When people are young, they have all kinds of dreams and what kind of life they want to live, and when they grow up, they find that they are facing all kinds of contradictions, solving all kinds of problems, and there are all kinds of ties between people and between people and society. "I wanted to convey this feeling, and it was a bit like the study of Gombrich's psychology of image reproduction, leaving a gap to be supplemented by each person's experience. I'm not emphasizing narrative, but feeling. ”So says the artist.

Temporary heights 120x120cm 油画 oli on canvas 2023The artist's artistic career began at the High School Attached to Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and went through three stages of systematic college education at the undergraduate and graduate level of the **Academy of Fine Arts. The interdisciplinary study in the Department of Design and the graduate degree in the Department of Oil Painting enable them to have a solid foundation in painting and more perspectives of thinking. With the title of "Silence in a Quiet Place", Wu Didi's art is always returning to the ontology and home of life from nature, rethinking the existence and situation of human beings in a modern world where nature has been gradually recycled and objectified since the Industrial Revolution, and returning to silence.

For thousands of years, the ancients have endowed 'bamboo' with a lot of spirit, and the bamboo series works hope to reactivate this spirit, and combine geometric shapes with bamboo, the simplest and simplest carrier of the material world, to produce the image of bamboo beyond people's experience, and express the reality of modern people. In my paintings, bamboo is logically self-consistent but full of contradictions, both right and wrong. Abstraction and figuration dissolve and construct each other on the canvas. It continues the externalization of the spirit of bamboo, and gives it a broader and more abstract image and expression. ”Wu Didi's poetic exploration of nature is a minimalist work that omits the background, and the absurdist presentation of bamboo on the screen brings the viewer into a more realistic physical space. The artist said that he hopes to find a critical point between figuration and abstraction, and to understand the world in different dimensions. "One of my works depicts a vine standing upright, turning a thousand times like water, constantly changing its state and shape, constantly changing roles, but still strong and upright, still trying to be independent. "The artist's work presents us with the complex relationship between man and the world and the meaning of existence from various angles. His artistic practice is the investigation of the perception of existence by individual perception, revealing the visual reality beyond the visual distance in a subtle way, dragging out the habitual objects that carry ancient oriental aesthetics and semantics such as rocks, moss, bamboo, vines and birds out of the inherent context, so that they can re-establish additional kinship and constantly reveal themselves at different levels, so that the aesthetic objects of traditional humanities have a distinct modernity. At the same time, the artist also uses the atmosphere of new objects to correspond to the living situation of contemporary people through installations, spatial structures and other forms.

qAs a female artist, your work has been a combination of rigidity and softness for so many years. But the woman's side is still very clear. What is the relationship between female identity and artistic creation?aI used to specifically reject the title of "female creator". Once you emphasize "female", you are actually out of the subject, and you have a special and different standard, so you feel particularly aggrieved. Having a child made me truly appreciate the identity of a woman, I felt like a "mother earth", and suddenly I was close to life again, the child really grew up in you, was conceived, and grown, so everything changed, and the mother began to think from the perspective of others, and no longer put herself first. q"Geometric Landscape" presents a different look, if there is softness hidden in bamboo and birds, does "Geometric Landscape" contain sharp blades? aAfter giving birth in 2011, I was a little depressed, and I collaborated with my husband Tao Lei on this work, hoping to use the work to drive my state. The foundation of "Geometric Landscape" is wood, and the rice paper on it is glued on by myself, and I have been trying, so there are many colors under the rice paper that are revealed layer by layer, which is particularly thick. Geometry is the starting point for human beings to begin rational thinking, which is rational Western, and landscape is the image of the East, emphasizing the relationship between man and the world, and this work has developed all my later series. The landscape is the landscape, and the relationship between the landscape in Chinese painting and the person is object-painted a road, a pavilion, and the feeling to the person is that you can walk in, that is a place that can be reached. There is no single point of view in the work, and the relationship is a bit like the change of scenery in a Chinese garden, and the shape presented at each step is different. Xu Bing commented on my work and quoted the phrase "the end of the world is close at hand", which is a condensed state that contains a kind of worldview. I hope that everyone can create a place for their spirits to rest, to let themselves enter a peaceful environment, hidden from the world. qSeeing the sense of power that your work presents, where do you draw your energy from? aThere are countless doubts and difficulties in life that need to be faced by themselves in a state that has just ended stagnation, so hope rushes out of the ** and is eager to fly. It's a bit like a butterfly, as a cocoon is a silent body, and if you want to fly, you have to explode your shell, and I feel like I'm constantly in this tiny state. When in bondage, people actually support each other and sting each other, and people are like monuments together, like bamboos. For example, the black stone work "Inner Stillness and Movement". Black may be the source of everything, the end of everything. All mosses have no color, they all grow and die inside. Of course, there are also vigorous bamboos, which stand in the early morning as if they had just woken up, with three trees on the top and four on the bottom, and the arrangement and combination are magical. I create a lot of contradictions, or strangeness, in my paintings, and remind everyone that what I want to express is in the paintings.

qWhat imaginative and creative women have you met? Who are the women in your life who surprise you? aMy grandmother was not educated, but she adhered to the most simple wisdom of life, and always looked at everything open-mindedly. I once went to see her, when she was very old, and there was a red flower in the red bottle at the bedside. She said that my flower only cost a dollar, and it has always bloomed by my side, and it will never be defeated. When I was depressed and anxious, I asked my grandmother, what is the most important thing about people? She said that the first is life, and the second is life. "When you reach my age, you know that only life comes first, and everything else is in life, so don't care too much. "She's not educated, but she looks at things from a different perspective, which is closer to the essence of life. qMan and nature are one and the same, how do you draw inspiration from nature? aSome critics say that my bamboo is related to discipline, and it is the discipline of the form of bamboo by external forces. This disciplined society gradually became a categorized society that pursued merit. If you can't ask for it, you will be prone to depression, and the best ** is in nature. When I saw the stars in Inner Mongolia, people were extremely small under the stars. Go to the rainforest and see the lush and abundant plants that grow completely outside of human society. Human beings are social animals, but when they pay too much attention to social attributes, they actually ignore the biological side. qDo you have a big deal with aesthetics? Are you interested in art? aAesthetics are closely linked to values and are the externalized embodiment of personal values, but it may have a lag. The Venus of Willendorf is a 11The 1-centimeter prehistoric nude statues, whose faces are hidden by curly hair, are speculated by archaeologists to be seen by hominids as symbols of reproduction, so they appear to have plump breasts and fat buttocks. The earliest jeans were born because of the needs of work, telling everyone that labor is glorious, and the holes in jeans are also a state after labor. The functionality of the clothes is gone, but the clothing has endured. There's no way I'm going to wear clothes full of big logos, I can't wear diamonds. This is the orientation of values. I like the sense of relaxation that the garments convey and value the smart design over the precious materials. When I was taking art history classes at ** Drama School, I always emphasized the issue of aesthetic change, which is the driving force of students' future creation. qWhat do you think of the current situation of female creators? aWomen are in a particularly large group of people in all disciplines, and the work that girls are engaged in is becoming more and more boundary, which is a particularly interesting topic. There should be data to investigate what is causing this situation. This may be directly related to the parent's education and guidance, both boys and girls are equally good.
