As a well-known electronic foundry enterprise in China, Foxconn is also one of Apple's core foundries. For a long time, the vast majority of iPhones were produced by Foxconn, and even from the first generation of iPhones, Foxconn can be said to have cooperated very closely with Apple in its foundry.
Apple's idea of moving production to India can be said to be "Sima Zhao's heart, everyone knows it", and Apple has previously asked Foxconn, Wistron and other foundries to build factories in India. Judging from the current situation, India is having more say in the field of iPhone manufacturing, and the resulting situation is undoubtedly Apple and Foxconn.
Judging from the public data, the proportion of iPhone products made in India will reach 13% in 2023, and some industry insiders have analyzed that it is expected to continue to grow or even double this year. In fact, there has been news in the market that Apple intends to put nearly half of its iPhone production capacity in the Indian market around 2027.
It is worth noting that Foxconn has played an important role in this. In November and December 2023, Foxconn invested $11 billion and $12 billion in the Indian market, respectively, to build an Indian factory. Not only that, Foxconn also said that it will transfer domestic production capacity worth 300 billion yuan to India, expanding the number of employees in India to about 70,000.
Judging from Foxconn's series of measures, it does not plan to completely withdraw from the mainland market in a short period of time, after all, Foxconn also invested 500 million yuan in Henan to build a new energy auto parts foundry in early January, and expanded the production capacity of the Hengyang factory to meet the needs of iPhone bezels.
However, in the case of Apple's transfer of OEM capacity, Foxconn is indeed increasing investment in the Indian market. According to the analysis of some industry insiders, Foxconn is likely to want to build India into the next production center. After all, the Indian market is still relatively attractive to Foxconn.
India has a huge population and market potential, many mobile phone manufacturers have chosen to invest in India to build factories, Foxconn, as an electronic foundry company, naturally have to follow the footsteps of customers to transfer production capacity. Therefore, it is not surprising to invest in India to build a factory, not to mention that Apple has also made it clear that it wants to transfer more iPhone orders to India, and Foxconn will naturally choose.
Nowadays, India's voice in the field of iPhone OEM is increasing, which is also closely related to Foxconn. Now, the Indian local enterprise Tata Group has announced that it will join the Apple ** chain and will OEM iPhones and some related components for Apple.
Some industry insiders even said that the Tata Group is likely to become Apple's largest OEM in India. After all, the Tata Group has previously manufactured mobile phone frames and other components for Apple, and later acquired Wistron's electronics foundry in India, and is now negotiating with Pegatron to acquire the mobile phone foundry part of the related cooperation.
From this point of view, Foxconn seems to be a bit "thankless". However, for Foxconn, this is also unable to solve the problem, after all, Foxconn is Apple's main foundry, Apple has plans to transfer the industrial chain, and Foxconn will undoubtedly lose some orders if it does not keep up.
In the face of competition from local Indian enterprises, Foxconn is not only increasing its layout, but also accelerating the construction of factories. Judging from the news coming out of the Indian market, Foxconn will also copy the model of the mainland factory to India. Foxconn recently expanded its production of 13 dormitories in India, bringing the number of employees who can live to 370 thousand.
Not only that, some of the equipment in Foxconn's factory in India is also shipped from China, including manuals, buttons, etc. are in Chinese. This also makes it more difficult to train Foxconn's employees, after all, the quality of the Indian workforce is low, and it is not easy to use Chinese equipment.
Judging from the current news from Foxconn, Foxconn's employee training in India is basically more than three months. This has also led to the continuous delay in the construction and commissioning of Foxconn.
Foxconn's accelerated construction of factories has undoubtedly increased India's voice in the field of iPhone manufacturing, but Foxconn's plans to build factories in India do not seem to be going well.
