Mazda (Mazda) has fought hard in the mid-to-large SUV, in addition to the launch of the CX-90 and the big hit, and now the 2025 CX-70, which is actually a short-axle version of the CX-90, with a five-seat configuration instead of a seven-seater. The new SUV shares the same chassis platform and powertrain as its larger sibling, the CX-90, which means buyers can have options for three and two rows of seats.
Despite the same bloodline, there are some minor differences between the two Mazda mid-size and large SUVs. First of all, the design style of the CX-70 is more focused on sports performance, compared with the chrome CX-90, it has more use of gloss black trim, such as the grille with a gloss black mesh design, unlike the CX-90 with chrome trim, and the design of the front bumper is also different between the two models, the CX-70 bumper has a larger opening grille on both sides, and the rear bumper also adopts a new design, with pure decorative pseudo-vents at the corners. The mirror covers, door handles and roof crossbars are painted in dark colours, while the optional 21-inch wheels feature gloss black grooves and mechanical brushes.
The front of the CX-70 looks more aggressive and appealing than the CX-90, and the CX-90's flowing grille trim looks bloated. The CX-70 still has a rounded roof profile. The wheelbase of the CX-70 is the same as that of the CX-90, both at 3120mm, so there may be no change in seat space. Since it doesn't need to accommodate a third row of seats, the CX-70 boasts a huge luggage compartment with additional storage space under the floor panel.
The interior of the CX-70 is largely the same as that of the CX-90, except that there are no third-row seats. The only thing that is upholstered is red leather with black trim stripes, which is exclusive to the CX-70 model, while the black interior contrasts with the red stitching on the door side trim and steering wheel. Grey plastic trim with a printed carbon-like pattern detracts from the luxurious feel of the cabin.
Compared to the CX-90, the CX-70 has most of the same interior features, although it is the first Mazda model to integrate the Amazon Alexa with the central infotainment system. It provides voice control for some in-vehicle functions, such as air conditioning and infotainment, and also synchronizes remote control with Amazon-enabled home devices. The CX-70 also features ACC Cruise Control and Lane Centering that automatically activate in response to the driver. If the driver behind the wheel does not respond to the warnings from the safety assistance system, it is considered an emergency, and the car gradually slows down and stops in the lane with the double flashing warning lights activated.
The CX-70 uses the same powertrain as the CX-90 with a turbocharged 3The 3-liter inline-six engine delivers 280 hp and 332 lbs of torque for the base variant, while the S variant delivers 340 hp and 369 lbs of torque. There is also a plug-in hybrid system for the 25-liter inline-four engine, 17An 8kWh lithium-ion battery and a 68kW electric motor deliver 323hp maximum horsepower and 369lbs of torque.
Four-wheel drive is standard across the range, with a six-cylinder engine capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds and a hybrid capping up to 3,500 pounds. The CX-70 will be lighter than the larger CX-90 (final specs yet to be announced), so it could also be a little more efficient. For PHEV models, the all-electric range is around 48 km.
