Xu Wei (March 12, 1521-1593) was a native of Shanyin County, Shaoxing Prefecture, Zhejiang Province (now Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province). The first word Wenqing, later changed to the word Wenchang, the number Qingteng old man, Qingteng Taoist, Tianchi Sheng, Tianchi Shanren, Tianchi Yuyin, Jin Lei, Jin Huishan people, Shanyin cloth clothes, Baiyu Shanren, Goose Nose Mountain Nong, Tian Danshui, Tian Shuiyue. He was a writer, calligrapher, painter, opera, and military strategist in the middle of the Ming Dynasty.
Xu Wei's talent emerged at a very early stage. At the age of 20, he had become a showman, but he was deeply disappointed that he had failed to pass the township examination many times. However, he did not give up because of this, but chose to devote himself to Hu Zongxian's staff, assisting him in important tasks such as capturing Xu Hai and trapping Wang Zhi. However, with Hu Zongxian's imprisonment, Xu Wei's life also changed dramatically. He attempted suicide nine times in fear and was sentenced to death for manslaughtering his stepwife. In prison, he suffered seven years of captivity, until he was rescued by his friend Zhang Yuanchen and others.
After his release, Xu Wei did not stop his footsteps, he traveled to Beijing, went south to Jinling, and north to Biansai, and created many passionate and in-depth works through his own observation and experience. His paintings have a unique style, can absorb the essence of his predecessors and become his own school, creating a precedent for Chinese splashed ink freehand painting, and is known as the originator of the "Qingteng School". At the same time, his calligraphy, poetry and ** also have a very high attainment, known as "a bright person". In addition, he also has a strong interest in opera and unique insights, and his book "Narrative of Southern Words" is the first theoretical monograph on southern opera in China. In his later years, Xu Wei lived a difficult life, and his collection of thousands of books was also sold. However, he still insisted on his artistic pursuits and ideals, and died with anger. His passing is deeply regrettable, but his work and spirit have been influenced by generations to come. Xu Wei's life was varied, he was not only an outstanding artist, but also a brave fighter and thinker.
