Micron Technology announces the industry's first standard low-power compressed add-on memory module (LPCAM2), a new memory module based on LPDDR5X memory designed for notebooks and desktops.

Micron's LPCAM2 modules are available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities with data transfer speeds of up to 9,600 mts, up from 6,400 mts with DDR5 SODIMs. LPDDR5X memory may be slightly inferior to DDR5 in terms of latency, but it can make up for it with higher data transfer rates. In addition, the modular form factor does not increase the latency of LPDDR5X memory.

LPDDR5X memory offers 43-58% less effective power per 64-bit bus and 80% less standby power consumption compared to DDR5 speeds, and LPCam2 modules also carry power management ICs and voltage regulation circuitry, providing module manufacturers with other ways to reduce the power consumption of their products.

The LPCAM2 module has a 128-bit memory interface and also simplifies the memory subsystem, slowing down the load on processing AI on the PC. The LPCAM2 module saves 64% of the space, and in order to reduce the area of the LPCAM22 module, Micron vertically integrates multiple LPDDR5X memory devices using advanced packaging technology.

Pr**Een Vaidyanathan, vice president and general manager of Micron's computing products division, said the company optimizes the experience for laptop users of LPCAMM2 products. This first-of-its-kind product enhances the capabilities of AI laptops with memory capacities that can be improved as technology and customer needs evolve.

Lenovo will be one of the first companies to use Micron's LPCAM2 memory module, said Yasuichi Tsukumoto, executive director and distinguished engineer at Lenovo Business Product Solutions Development, which is a dynamic new form factor in the PC ecosystem that improves performance, scalable storage capacity, and improves battery life in thin and light laptops.

Currently, the LPCAM22 memory module is only available from Micron Technology, and Samsung and other companies are also vying for the LPCAM module. Micron believes that the LPCAM2 module will be able to address not only small formal desktops and laptops, but also other types of applications, including embedded, edge computing, and networking solutions.
