Mr. Huang Haihui told his own entrepreneurial story
Starting a business was a very fortuitous event for me. My first job was in a chip company, making **, camera software. Twenty years ago, the camera function of mobile phones was very weak, and what we did was a more powerful digital camera as big as a small brick, which was high-tech at that time.
In 2003, the company sent me back to China on a business trip to the Shanghai branch. When I arrived in China, I found that the difference between Chinese and American digital accessories was very large, so I was very curious to buy a batch of digital video camera wires and sell them on eBay (equivalent to China**) in the United States, and found that the demand was very large and the profit was very high. A Sony or Apple data cable is about 10 yuan, and it costs 39 yuan in regular stores in the United States$99, we sell it for a dozen dollars, and everyone goes crazy to grab it.
Later, we developed some new varieties, such as Apple's iPod **player in 2005, and there are also many accessories in demand, and we also sell them online. He started his business in his garage, then rented an office near his home, and after a year increased to more than a dozen offices, the business slowly grew bigger and bigger.
In the first three years, there was very little competition, and after 2008, it was very competitive. Because there was a financial crisis in the world in 2008. There are many banks and companies in the United States that lay off employees, and many people also start doing business on eBay in order to make a living because of its low threshold. Luckily, we made a transformation in that year: we set up our own factory in China, specializing in the production of spare parts. On the one hand, it is a kind of self-protection, on the other hand, it is also a kind of self-protection, if you have your own factory, the confidentiality of developing new products is better, and plagiarism is not so fast. We were the first to sell Apple computer accessories on Amazon, such as Apple computer cases.
Mr. Huang Haihui's entrepreneurial philosophy
On Amazon, we have a very good reputation among our users, and there are thousands of reviews for any of our best-selling products. There are now more than 100,000 user reviews, with an average of 45 out of 5. Our slogan is 100% satisfaction or 100 % money back. We will also cover the shipping costs of returns.
The credit system of American society is relatively well developed and complete. For example, at Walmart in the United States, if you are not satisfied with the shoes that you have worn for three months, you can also return them. This may not be unimaginable in China, but it is true in the United States. Merchants have full trust in consumers. However, it is not excluded that individual consumers will take advantage of and abuse the trust of merchants. But I don't think we should lower or change our business philosophy just because there are such extreme situations, and people should have mutual trust and trust each other's moral standards.
Looking back on the past, I think our success is first because we are familiar with the business environment in China and the United States, and we happen to step on the shoulders of giants, such as Apple, Amazon, and Google. For example, I often tell many friends that I am an Apple fan, because our first pot of gold was earned by selling Apple accessories.
China's e-commerce is developed, and to a certain extent, if there is no eBay and Amazon, there will be no **, Alibaba, and JD.com. Their models are all carried forward by the American e-commerce model. And I often say that if I hadn't come to the U.S. to study after graduating from Fudan at that time, I wouldn't have found this opportunity. In any case, when we are menstruating, we should go to the outside world to have a look, and after broadening our horizons, we can use it for a lifetime
If any nation wants to become strong, it must absorb the strengths of others. Therefore, I hope that if you have the opportunity, you will definitely go to different countries to have a look, absorb their good methods and concepts, and use them for us. The process of growing up in life is to read thousands of books, travel thousands of miles, and read countless people. The same is true for a nation and a country.
How Chinese students and visiting scholars start a business in the United States
The business system in the United States is developed, perfect, and open, even a foreigner can open a company in the United States, and the H1B work visa is supported. I took advantage of this policy at the time, because I didn't get my green card in 2008, so I started my own company, so I didn't have to worry about not having an employer to support my green card application. This is also thanks to the former ** Clinton of the United States, who passed a bill when he was in office to encourage foreign immigrants to start a company without obtaining a green card. Since the establishment of our company, we have also helped some Chinese friends to apply for H1B work visas and successfully apply for U.S. green cards.
The most important thing in cross-border e-commerce is information. For example, if you have products, information and services that others do not have, you can use the Internet to promote them and occupy the market. Of course, you also have to see if your product is easy to copy, and it is easy for someone to steal your market at a low price. Therefore, any product must consider its durability, and if you want to survive and develop for a long time, you need to look farther.
In 2008, we set up our own factory to ensure that the first chain is in our own hands. Because if R&D and production are controlled in your own hands, many variables can be reduced, such as quality cannot be controlled, and you cannot produce and deliver on time when customers place orders. Why do we dare to say 100% money back, because we are confident in the quality of our products, if you can't control the quality of the products, then sooner or later you will ruin your company's reputation.
Recommendations for integration into American society
I think it's not difficult to integrate into American society, but the most important thing is to follow the local customs. For example, the United States is relatively particular about the culture of repaying kindness and giving back to society, and pays great attention to how individuals or enterprises give back to society.
In 2012, we donated the new James Hunt Library in the name of the company, and we were the first Chinese students to give back to our alma mater at North Carolina State University, so our president and librarian were very happy at that time.
In 2014, a North Carolina State University alumnus who was in charge of sales at HP took the initiative to provide us with an order worth more than one million dollars to provide laptop protection accessories for 100,000 students in the CMS School District of Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina, because he appreciated our efforts to give back to our alma mater. Since then, we have gained confidence and reputation when dealing with K-12 schools in the United States.
This time, the governor of North Carolina appointed me as a member of the Multiracial Equality Commission, because they were selected based on the candidates' contributions and popularity to the society, and the members are broadly representative, such as blacks, Indians, etc., and it is an honor and a responsibility for me to be elected as a representative of the Chinese.
Because North Carolina values the contributions of Asian Americans to North Carolina. Our association has done a lot of things this year, such as facilitating the visit of Xu Xueyuan, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, to North Carolina, communicating with the Secretary of State of North Carolina and other leaders, and promoting Sino-US economic, trade and cultural exchanges and cooperation.
Mr. Huang Haihui spoke at the meeting of the North Carolina Commission on Multiracial Equality.
American impressions and life experiences
In 1998, my impression of the United States was from one or two books and a few movies. I think the United States is a more magical place. But when I first came to the United States, I thought that this place has such a small population, few high-rise buildings, and seems to be underdeveloped, how did it become a place that many people in the world yearn for? After staying for a long time, I found that the Americans are very friendly, with deep heritage and international resources.
For example, if you take a walk in the United States, everyone will greet you warmly, and the distance between people will be closer. The North Carolina triangle is the Silicon Valley of the eastern United States, with Duke University, North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other colleges and universities, medical, pharmaceutical, high-tech companies, Lenovo, IBM, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Cisco, and so on have branches here, which is a very suitable area for people to live and develop.
