TDK s piezoelectric solutions

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-02-21

PZT, or lead zirconate titanate, is by far one of the most widely used piezoelectric ceramic materials in the world. As a metal oxide, the excellent properties of PZT were first discovered by the Tokyo Institute of Technology around 1952. Compared to the previous barium titanate piezoelectric materials, PZT has a higher operating temperature and a stronger piezoelectric effect.

TDK uses three basic technologies to manufacture piezoelectric components:

Single-layer type

It is mainly used for sensors, actuators or buzzers that are traditionally manufactured using pressing or casting molding techniques.

Multi-layer type

Internal electrodes made of built-in AGPD or CU materials are often used in actuators and speakers.

MEMS-based components

It is used for ultrasonic TOF (time of flight) measurement.

TDK has piezoelectric component production sites in Europe and Asia, and its production capacity is able to meet the needs of the global market. Not only do we offer standard and customized solutions, but we also continue to expand our product portfolio with new, innovative modular solutions.

Applications & Products

Ultrasonic sensors

Ultrasonic sensors measure distance by emitting ultrasonic waves and receiving signals reflected back from the target. Because it measures the distance to a target by measuring the time between transmission and reception, ultrasonic sensors are also known as time-of-flight (TOF) sensors.

TDK offers the following ultrasound product lines:

Haptic solutions

Actuators are indispensable for vibrating haptic feedback on surfaces such as displays and wearables. Many solutions today use electromagnetic actuators, but this is limited to simple click and vibration haptic feedback. And for more versatile haptic feedback, the so-called high-definition haptics, a new generation of actuators is required.

Piezo actuators are ideal for creating high-definition haptics due to their short response times, amplification, and compact package, low power consumption, and high power.

TDK offers two product lines for haptic feedback applications:

Actuator elements

Piezo actuators are available in a variety of shapes, such as stacked, double piezoelectric wafer bending, or simple sheets.

Sound solutions

Piezo speakers use the piezoelectric effect to produce sound and can be a simple buzzer or a complete ultra-slim speaker, such as our PiezoListen range:
