Today's college students can earn credits by learning Go.

Even those who don't know much about Go can develop logical thinking skills through an introduction, and this course has now begun to be introduced in various universities in Japan.

By getting in touch with the traditional Japanese culture of Go, it is a fun way to improve your abilities.

"Games" and "culture" since ancient times still have a "learning" aspect.

Rediscover the value of "learning" in traditional "games" and "culture".

Logical thinking is an essential ability in both daily life and business activities. While there are many ways to develop logical thinking, such as language training, exploring habits of thought, and asking questions of oneself and others, there is no clear answer to how to do it for those who want to master this necessary skill.

Across Japan, more and more universities are offering Go as a formal course. Since 2005, when the University of Tokyo launched its first Go course, 37 universities have now offered Go courses.

Interview with a college Go course

The subject of this interview is Aoyama Gakuin University. It has been 11 years since Aoyama Gakuin University began to introduce Go courses. In the first half of this year, Go courses were offered at the Aoyama Campus and the second semester at the Sagami Campus.

Previously, Yoko Kuwabara served as a temporary instructor for 10 years, but from this year, Yuto Tajiri took over the position. Yuto Tajiri is a chess player who is actively involved in the popularization of Go and has served as a supervisor of the Go scene of Taiga Drama.

The Go course was very popular, with the original 50 places attracting nearly 90 students to sign up, reflecting the potential popularity of the game. The students who took the course were almost all beginners who did not know anything about the game of Go. Although Go was considered difficult, the students quickly understood the rules of the game, and the chess was already in the shape of a "chess".

Before class, students use laptops to run Go AI and ask questions, which shows that college students have a positive attitude towards learning. A lesson is 90 minutes long, half of which is spent lecturing and half is spent playing.

Regarding the attitude of college students towards Go courses, according to Yuhito Tajiri, many college students are rigorous, but this also leads to the problem of slow progress in the game. He said: "I hope they can play more chess, in fact, it is also important to get used to the feeling of losing. ”

On this day, he served as a teaching assistant (TA) for the students of the Go Club of Aoyama Gakuin University. The proportion of students in the liberal arts and sciences is roughly half and half. The male-to-female ratio is about 7:3 (but in the previous period, the male-to-female ratio was about 3:7). Attendance was high and all students listened attentively. After using the projector to explain the previous exercise, the 19-way course will be introduced.

First attempt at 19-way handicap

I believe that when it comes to 19 road plates, many friends may also be confused. The 19-way board is a huge board with 19 lines in both vertical and horizontal lines, which is also used by professional chess players to play. When getting started, use a small chessboard such as a 6-way, 9-way, or 13-way board. For these college students, this is the first time they have played a game with a 19-way board like a professional chess player.

They were listening to the teacher's explanation, and they were playing chess games together at the same table. The second half of the lesson is a game, this time with them starting the game from the middle game and finishing the game.

This was the 9th session, and they did a good job of finishing the 19-way handicap. When they were playing against each other, I asked the students why they chose this course.

When there was space in the class schedule, I started looking for interesting lessons, and then I found that the course of Go was a bit interesting."

I wanted to try to learn Go, but I never had the chance, so I'm very happy to have such a course at university."

I had to use my brain more than I expected, and the whole person was still very fulfilling, and I was a little tired after the course (laughs)."

Got these answers.

They also answered the question of whether their logical thinking ability has improved:

To be honest, I don't know how much I have mastered, but if I can understand the unknown world of Go and learn slowly, maybe this is the improvement of logical thinking."

To be honest, I haven't mastered Go very well, but it's still very interesting to be able to get in touch with these things that I don't know and learn slowly, and I can feel that I am growing."

During the game, the teacher gives instructions for each game.

Yuto Tajiri's impressions

Finally, we asked Yuto Tajiri to share his thoughts.

Although the rules of Go are simple, there are also complex aspects. Rather than teaching them technical content, I know more about letting them play Go. As long as you learn Go, you can use it for life. Go is also a great tool in terms of communication, and I hope they can also teach more people and then add more contacts for themselves."
