Google Pay will be closed in the United States from June 4 this year

According to foreign news reports, Google announced that Google Pay will be discontinued in the United States on June 4, 2024, to simplify its payment application. Thereafter, it will only be available in Singapore and India due to the unique needs of certain countries.

Back in 2022, Google Pay was largely replaced by Google Wallet, but it still operates in several countries, including the United States.

As part of the deprecation, Google will cancel peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, manage balances, and find offers and deals. For the latter, it recommends using the new offer destination on the search. After June 4, 2024, users will still be able to use Google Pay** to transfer their Google Pay (Gpay) balance to a bank account.

Google Wallet has now largely replaced gpay, with five times as many users in 180 countries as gpay, the company said. That's because it doesn't just process payments – in addition to credit and debit cards, it can also store transit cards, state IDs, driver's licenses, virtual car keys, and more.

Google's payment system has been a mess for years. It was originally launched in 2011 by Google Wallet. At the time, it was a touch-to-pay system, a few years before Apple Pay (2014), supported by retailers like Mastercard and Macy's.

Meanwhile, Android Pay came out in 2015 and was subsequently integrated with Google Wallet in 2018 and renamed Google Pay. In addition, the company initially had a Google Wallet card (which was phased out in 2016), which is actually a prepaid debit card that can be used at any retailer that accepts Mastercard. Now everything is back under the umbrella of Google Wallet – unless the company changes its mind again.
