History repeating itself? Kelleher will once again be the starting goalkeeper for Liverpool's Carabao Cup final
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Kleimbo Kelleher will be Liverpool's starting goalkeeper in next month's Carabao Cup final.
The Reds secured their place in the Carabao Cup final with an aggregate score of 3-2 after a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.
Kelleher has started every game in the Carabao Cup so far this season, and he made four saves in that game to help Liverpool progress to the final. It's reminiscent of Liverpool's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea in 2022, where Kelleher scored the winning penalty in the final penalty shoot-out.
Jurgen Klopp reiterated after the semi-final that although the 25-year-old goalkeeper has spent most of his time as Alisson's replacement, he is still a 'top' goalkeeper and his place will not be taken at Wembley.
When asked if the final would change the current line-up, Klopp replied: "Kelleher is a top goalkeeper. When Alisson was fit, he didn't get a lot of playing and I really wanted to give him a chance to play. I told Alisson before the season that it was actually ...... two years agoThat's what we're arranged. ”
In addition to being the main goalkeeper in the Carabao Cup, Kelleher has made five starts in the Europa League this season and has made two Premier League starts in Alisson's absence due to injury.
Kelleher has made 12 appearances for Liverpool so far this season, the most appearances for the Irish Cork-born goalkeeper since his debut in 2019/20, while also holding the record for the most penalty saves in the Liverpool squad.
