—— Practical advanced usage:How to make imported PDFs searchable
Goodnotes, a note-taking app that has swept the world, is known as the "Hermes" of the note-taking industry for its elegant design and powerful features. It can not only perfectly replace paper notebooks, but also use the powerful performance of iPad to become paper notebooks, surpassing paper notebooks and entering a new realm of learning and work.
The uses of Goodnotes can be divided into two main categories, one is:Learn, one category is:Creation。The former can be imported into books for systematic learning, such as highlighting, underlining, writing notes, writing summaries, writing experiences, and drawing structural diagrams; The latter is such as making handbooks, drawing, and mind mapping.
One of the uses of GoodNotes: Learning (**DK Cheese).
The second purpose of goodnotes: to make a handbook (**camille-turtle).
I once imported more than a dozen kilograms of textbooks into GoodNotes, and then threw the books aside to realize a tablet to "go around the world", anytime, anywhere, elegantly studying, and showing off sharing notes.
This article will only talk about one practical high-level usage:How to make imported PDFs searchable
Scenario-based: When you want to find a certain content in a textbook or in a notebook, you don't need to turn over thick books and thick notes, open your mobile phone or tablet and use a cmd+f to easily get it, and all the content containing keywords is highlighted at your fingertips.
Some people say that goodnotes can search for notes in the first place!
The problem is very good, but the high-level use is not necessarily the case, such as the postgraduate entrance examination, writing, many textbooks or materials are not available on the Internet, you can only scan them yourself, at most you can get a photocopy, because its content is in **format, so it can be imported and cannot be searched, this is a major pain point of high-level use, imagine that you have thousands of pages of books or information in your notes, and you want to find a keyword and can't get it through search, you can only find it by human flesh, what kind of disaster will it be! Therefore, this feature is in no way allowed to be castrated.
Here, we all know by default why the text on ** cannot be searched, while the text in word can be searched.
Anyone who will come in to read this article will most likely be familiar with this step, because learning with goodnotes is the only way to go.
To make this article coherent, I'll briefly explain it here.
There are three ways to import textbooks into Goodnotes:
1. Import**:Imported in this way, the text on ** cannot be recognized, i.e. cannot be searched. So if you have a few pages of information, you can use your phone to take a photo and import it, but you can only see it, not search it.
2. Import PDF file:There are two kinds of pdf files, one is in text format, and the other is in ** format, the former can be searched when imported, and the latter cannot be searched. How can I tell the difference between two types of files? I'll talk about it briefly.
3. Take a photo and scan it through the "Scan Document" function of GoodNotes: Despite being in ** format, it can be searched, which is a conscience feature of GoodNotes. For beginner users with little information, there is no problem in taking photos and scanning them one by one, but if it is a book, the ** scanned out will be more or less deformed, and the second is that the workload is very large, which is enough to discourage you.
We have two formats for **pdf, one is text format and the other is ** format.
We can think of the two formats as Word documents and ** files, respectively, and PDF can be seen as an encapsulation of these two files. For the vast majority of apps, it can recognize text, but not the text in **.
For advanced users, it is best to be able to learn the books, and it is best not to fall into scanning, which will be a lot of trouble. But fortunately, the Internet is very developed now, and there is a high probability that ordinary books can be reached. How to search and ** e-book, this can be said to be a technical work, so to speak, I want to read the book, except for the one that has just been published, there is almost nothing I can't see, as for how to search for books, here is to dig a hole first, and then have the opportunity to fill it.
If we can get the pdf study book in text format, it is our luck, let's hurry up and touch wood.
But in fact, for advanced learners, it is already good to be able to photocopy the format of **to**, at least we don't have to scan it page by page.
Scanning books on mobile phones will also be distorted, although many apps can correct them, if you use a scanner, it will be another trouble. Of course, there is a solution to scanning books, I use goodnotes to learn is a closed loop, first a brief spoiler, because after all, it is not the subject of this article, you can go to a certain treasure of all, it is very cheap, you can scan without opening the book, if necessary, you can also open the book and scan it, and then bind it for you. I know what you're asking, but what I'm trying to say is, firstly, the binding works well, and secondly, for the master of learning, the content in the brain is king, and everything else is a floating cloud!
But whether it is a photocopied version or a scanned version, it cannot be searched by Goodnotes.
Method 1:The easiest way is to drag the text with the mouse, and the text can be selected, which is the text format, and the one that cannot be selected is the ** format.
For example, the following PDF can be selected in text format
The following pdf can't be selected, it's in **format:(This book looks like a photocopy, and many electronic textbooks found by advanced users are like this).
Method 2:Now, for Apple ecosystem users, the above method is not applicable, because Apple will automatically do a text recognition operation (i.e., OCR) when opening the ** or ** version of the PDF, so that you feel that the text on it is text. The second simple method is that you enlarge the page and enlarge it again, if the text is blurry, it must be ** format, if the text is not blurry and always sharp, then it is the text format.
I'll take the screenshots of the above two PDFs for everyone.
Isn't it sharp?
It's blurry!
Of course, there are other methods, so we won't go into details, such as opening it in a browser to see if you can drag the selection.
Finally got down to business, and the front was all foreshadowing.
But as an article, foreshadowing is as important as the main topic, just as foreplay is as important as the main play.
Let's talk about the principle first, after we get the ** version of the pdf, please process it with special software, and the processing steps are:
Recognize the text on **(Of course, we need to ** pdf is clear enough, if it is not clear, in fact, it does not hinder much, it can identify most of the keywords, it does not affect the look, at best it affects the integrity of the search).
The second step is equivalent to us putting ** into the word as the background, and then we position the cursor above the ** text, enter the corresponding text, and then set the text color to transparent, so that it does not affect the **visual effect, and can select and use the text above.
Then pack the ** along with the text into a new PDF.
In this way, the new PDF will become in text format, but a ** background is added under the transparent text.
So what tool can do this?
I'm using an Apple computer, so I'll start by introducing the methods that work in macOS
Open the PDF with preview, export the file as a new PDF, and check "Check in text" when exportingOK, all the same!
Attached below is a screenshot of the actual operation:
Open PDF - File - Export
Tick "Check in text".
After exporting, open a new document and find that the text can be selected
Now import it into goodnotes and see if you can search for it
We were surprised to find that it was really searchable.
From now on, we can have fun learning this lesson in GoodNotes!
What if it's not an Apple computer?
My focus in this article is two:
One is how to use GoodNotes to learn
I prefer to use the word "utilization", the subtext of this word is that we know its working mode well and we have the ability to take its essence, which is what a learner should have, learning to step on the shoulders of giants.
The second is the principle of converting ** format pdf files into text format:
With the principle, we can expand its use and know how to deal with it.
Now we know that the textualization of ** format pdf, its principle is very simple, and it is very versatile, there must be a lot of software that can achieve it, here I provide a "meta method", on the Internet search".** PDF embedded text OCRYou can find a lot of software or systems (put a screenshot below).
Dig a pit again,There is a special app to increase the margins,Next time I will open a special article**Say,Here is a picture,If you are interested, please follow me first:
Before:After:
The regular steps to learn with a textbook include:
Read the textbook.
Mark the important parts: highlight, underline (with a different color marker).
Mark the main points or points in the book; Write in a book or notebook: study notes, supplementary charts, learning experiences, key summaries, etc.
Do practice questions, correct, summarize mistakes to the notebook, brush the wrong questions twice or brush the wrong questions three times.
Review regularly according to the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve.
Choose the Feynman method to teach to others.
To learn in the above conventional way, we need to bring the following items: books, pens, and books. And if you can't bring these items with you at all times, you can't study anytime and anywhere. And because we can't take these things with us anytime, anywhere, our traditional methods don't make it possible to learn anytime, anywhere.
Learning with goodnotes, to be precise, with electronic methods, has the following advantages:
Learn Anytime, Anywhere:Except for electronic devices, such as tablets or mobile phones, you don't need to bring anything else, so you can learn almost anytime and anywhere;
Notes are efficient and beautiful: You can type, you can write by hand, you can use a variety of colors of strokes or highlights, you can use a variety of linear, thick, and color pens to write and draw, clear and efficient.
Searchable, searchable, searchable:Say important things three times, search for book content, search for note content, and be very efficient!
Content can be placed in the cloud:There is no need to worry about loss or damage. All my files, yes, all, including temporary files, are in the cloud, as long as I remember my iCloud account password, I can go all over the world (not where there is no network), one phone can access all my files, and all the mobile phones, tablets, and computers are fully synchronized.
A certain master, I can't find the name, sorry)
Of course, there are drawbacks to e-learning, such as not being accustomed to reading e-content. What I want to say is that you go to the screen time to see how much time you spend brushing the circle of friends in a day**, and we are essentially not too good at watching electronic content.
One of the words I advocate is "elegant", and although I am not elegant in appearance, it does not prevent me from learning in a "elegant" way:
I don't have to carry itHeavyschool bags;
I don't have toAnytime, anywhereStudy and always have a book and a pen;
I can read 30 pages between coffee breaks; I can take out my phone at any time when I am inspired to write down the solution ideas;
I canModify at willMy notes, including resizing, coloring, positioning;
When my thoughts are springing up, I can insert a page anywhere to make me believe;
When someone asks me a question, I can take my notes even when I'm on the toiletShare:to the other party;
I can also export each of my notes as a PDF for past learningSouvenir, instead of keeping thick discarded and tasteless paper materials.
Learning is joyful and easy.
I enjoy learning the "method of learning" more than the course of study, i.eMeta-learning
