After the release of the iPhone 15 series, there are more and more leaks about the iPhone 16 series in 2024. In the discussion about the new iPhone in 2024, Apple filed a new patent indicating that the new generation of iPhones may have an "underwater mode".
The 78-page patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) outlines a "special-purpose" iPhone interface designed specifically for underwater use. If we look at the details given in the patent, Apple considers the current iOS software to be "bulky and inefficient" when wet.
The goal of Apple's new patent is to solve this problem with a simplified "underwater user interface". This new interface can make the buttons larger, simplify the menus, and rely more on hardware buttons, such as volume controls.
The illustration in the patent above shows an iPhone in a fish tank, with a number of icons indicating the use of underwater mode. The app will adapt to larger buttons to meet the needs of wet fingers.
For example, a camera app can use the volume buttons to zoom instead of the usual zoom gesture. A similar feature is expected to appear on the iPhone 16 as well, possibly with a new "Snap" button.

This new patent appears to be an extension of it, only with more features. This move is in line with Apple's trend of improving the water resistance of its devices. Apple files many patent applications every week, and just because they have a patent doesn't necessarily mean that the idea will appear in future products. AI with a new design and smarter AI won't be seen until next year's iPhone 17 series.
