Ophthalmologist Pan Jifu is the retrograde behind the light

Mondo Health Updated on 2024-02-18

At 10 o'clock in the evening on the first day of the Lunar New Year, in the operating room of Yunnan Baoshan Aiwei Eye Hospital, Pan Jifu and the medical staff were silently busy. On that day, they admitted more than 20 patients with eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, and ...... "disinfection", "anesthesia" and "scalpel".They tacitly performed the operation with short words and clean movements. By the end of the last operation, Pan Jifu looked at the wall clock slightly tiredly, and it was already 1 o'clock in the morning.

Pan Jifu has worked in the Department of Ophthalmology of Baoshan Hospital of Yunnan Armed Police Corps (hereinafter referred to as "Armed Police Hospital") for 26 years, during which he served as the director of the Department of Otolaryngology, the vice chairman of the Baoshan Branch of Yunnan Medical Association, and the current vice president of Baoshan Aiwei Eye Hospital. In 1972, Pan Jifu was born in Xundian, Kunming, with the dream and dedication to medicine, from 1991 to 1996 he studied clinical medicine at Dali Medical College, and graduated with honors, and after graduation, he worked in the Armed Police Hospital, and began his nearly 30-year career in ophthalmology, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of myopia, cataract, oculoplastic surgery, strabismus amblyopia, lacrimal duct disease, corneal disease, optometry, fundus disease, etc., and used his spare time to study in professional plastic surgery hospitals. More than 36,000 surgeries have been performed, including more than 5,000 cases of myopia and more than 15,000 cases of cataracts. During this period, he won 3 Baoshan Science and Technology Progress Awards, all of which were the first, published 11 articles, and made 1 third-class merit. With his superb medical skills and noble medical ethics, he has become a well-known doctor in Baoshan, setting a model in the field of ophthalmology in western Yunnan, and the description at the beginning is the epitome of his work.

The "retrograde" of the times

In Pan Jifu's medical career, he always stood on the cusp of the times and moved against the wind.

In the early 90s, the People's Armed Police Hospital took the lead in carrying out lens implantation and myopic membrane incision surgery (RK surgery), and at the same time carried out cataract surgery, becoming the first hospital in Baoshan to carry out myopia surgery and cataract surgery. During this period, the department invested 20,000 yuan to set up an operating room, although the conditions are simple, but it still carries 20-30 surgeries per day, and the department has gradually established a reputation among the people in Baoshan.

In 2001, Pan Jifu went to the Department of Ophthalmology of the Third Military Medical University (Chongqing) for further study, and his skills became more and more sophisticated, and he was proficient in the development of complex eye diseases such as strabismus, ptosis, entropion, intraocular injection, enucleation, dacryocystitis, etc., and began to complete various ophthalmic surgeries independently.

In 2008, Pan Jifu's career ushered in an important turning point. At that time, the Armed Police Hospital cooperated with a company in Shanghai to introduce advanced excimer laser surgery equipment for myopia and astigmatism, and Pan Jifu became the first doctor to carry out this operation in western Yunnan. With the gradual expansion of the scale of the department, the patient carrying capacity gradually overloaded, their department moved from one floor to one building, Pan Jifu in the old leaders of the department and the dean of the trust and support, with his profound outpatient experience and the foundation of further study, took over as the deputy director of the ENT department, in 2011 as the director of the ENT department, carried out most of the eye surgery and other ENT surgery, leading the department into a new stage of development.

At that time, Pan Jifu's work intensity and efficiency were amazing, and his schedule was always full. It can receive 50-60 outpatients in one morning, up to more than 100 people a day, and the number of ophthalmology outpatient clinics accounts for almost half of the total number of departments. "At that time, the patients who came to Director Pan to see their eyes were all over the place, from the door of the clinic to the corridor, and the wooden floor of the corridor had been rubbed old and white," Zhao Min, a former ENT doctor at the Armed Police Hospital and a student of Pan Jifu, recalled to reporters that because of the constant stream of patients all year round, it also brought a lot of business to restaurants and barber shops around the hospital.

The operating table is even busier, after the outpatient clinic starts from the afternoon, and finally can complete 40-50 surgeries, of which gium surgery only takes more than 10 minutes, cataract surgery takes 20-30 minutes, laser myopia surgery is also completed quickly and accurately within 10-20 minutes, and it is the norm to often work until 10 o'clock at night. Because an average operation needs to be disinfected 8 times, the doctor's hands are washed until they are white and blistered, especially in winter, there is no hot water, and the hands are extremely dry. "I didn't have time to stop, so I felt that no matter how tired I was, I was very motivated. Zhao Min said with a smile.

The "messenger" behind the light

Pan's dedication is not only reflected in his daily work, but also in his perseverance in the face of difficulties and challenges. An orthopedic surgeon recommended Pan Jifu to wear a plaster cast and recuperate for a period of time, but the plaster cast meant that his feet could not land for 3 months. For the next 10 days, he walked on crutches, and after one day of surgery, the patient found the bandages on Pan Jifu's feet and said with a smile, "It's really a 'sick doctor'!" ”

Pan Jifu was attacked by a suspected mentally disordered patient, resulting in an ear injury, and returned to work a few days later to continue serving patients. As Tao Yong, an ophthalmologist in Beijing, joked when he picked up the scalpel again after being injured in an attack, "I treated the patient too well, otherwise how could he achieve a precise strike?" They are convinced that the world is still full of light, "If the accident knocks on the door first, tell it that you can let tomorrow come first".

He has precise techniques and superb medical skills, remembering that Pan Jifu once treated a 105-year-old man from Kass Town, Changning, when the old man's physical condition and eyesight conditions were extremely poor, but his family believed in Pan Jifu's superb medical skills, and he was relieved to hand over the old man to him, and the old man's eyesight was restored to 1 one month after surgery0, which is better than the eyesight of some young people.

There is no banquet in the world, and the busy scene that once brought light to patients came to an end in 2019, when the hospital was withdrawn and merged due to military restructuring, and Pan Jifu went to work in the Yunnan Provincial Hospital of the Armed Police in Kunming. Because his family is in Baoshan, he is still accustomed to the clear weather and human touch of Baoshan, so he joined Yunnan Ivey Medical Group at the end of 2022, went to Kunming General Hospital for 5 months of further study, successively went to the optometry department of the hospital to learn ocular surface, oculoplastic surgery, and refractive department to learn consultation, etc., and officially became the vice president of Baoshan Ivey Eye Hospital in 2024.

During his time at the Kunming General Hospital, he clearly felt the difference between military hospitals and private hospitals. Military hospitals are public attributes, and patients take the initiative to seek medical treatment, while private hospitals can take the initiative to provide door-to-door services to patients. In the past, because there were too many patients, there were fewer opportunities to go out for training and learning, and occasionally went to Dali, Kunming and other places, but now after engaging in more professional and meticulous work, coupled with uninterrupted training, the business has been systematically learned, and the professional knowledge has been further improved. However, the credibility of private hospitals still needs to be improved, which requires doctors' superb medical skills to accumulate public reputation, and hospitals to expand their publicity to let the masses recognize private hospitals, believing that private hospitals can also treat good eyes and cure diseases. Pan Jifu said earnestly.

After returning to Baoshan Ivey Eye Hospital, he was in charge of the refractive department, mainly responsible for ICL lens implantation myopia surgery, excimer laser myopia surgery, etc., and planned to carry out oculoplastic surgery, corneal transplantation and other surgeries. In addition to the new colleagues, almost all of the staff in the department are his former subordinates of the Armed Police Hospital, and they are still familiar and cordial. For the development of the department, he has new ideas and ideas, and expressed his hope that he can continue to lead the refractive team well, at the same time clarify the process, constantly make up for the shortcomings of the personnel, improve the knowledge and skills of the personnel through training and learning, so that everyone can be a pacesetter, and do a good job in the operation and serve the majority of patients.

In 2019, Zhao Min, Yang Jingli and other medical staff continued to be employed by Baoshan Ivey Eye Hospital with rich practical experience to serve patients in the clinical frontline. Yang Jingli recalled, "About ten years ago, I just graduated, and I wanted to study more, so I took the initiative to apply to follow Director Pan for consultation, and helped Director Pan record medical records every day, learn to see and prescribe medicine. Yang Jingli has grown from youth to maturity in her work, and she has a family and children in life, and Pan Jifu is her witness as a mentor. It is under the influence of Pan Jifu that Yang Jingli continues to improve herself and bring light to patients.

Pan Jifu interprets the life belief of "since he has chosen the distance, he only cares about the wind and rain", his story inspires his colleagues around him, he has a gentle personality, outstanding emotional intelligence, wisdom and intelligence, flexible fingers, full of team cohesion, calm in the face of pressure, always able to move forward in adversity, conveying the spirit of selfless dedication and the power of perseverance to move forward.

In recent years, the pace of work has slowly slowed down, he has found a world in life, he likes to take a walk in his spare time, read books on history and biographies, and he prefers a sentence advocated by the psychologist Wang Yangming, "People must grind in things to be able to stand, to be still and fixed, and to move and move." ”

To the whimpering and roaring in the night, who said that only those who stand in the light are heroes......As the song "The Lonely Brave" sings, Pan Jifu is a "retrograde" who stands behind the light. (Hong Xiaoyuan).
