Chen Duxiu looked for paper in tears, and his wife asked why she was sad
In August 1938, Chen Duxiu took refuge in Jiangjin, Chongqing, at this time he lost his best friend Li Dazhao, lost his two sons, Yannian and Qiao Nian, and even had no money, so he could only come to Chongqing to seek refuge with friends.
Although the celebrities in Jiangjin were very excited and wanted to see what kind of heroic figure the former commander-in-chief of the "May Fourth Movement" was, a director of the academic affairs office of Jiangjin Deganba Middle School said: "Chen Duxiu is no longer good, he has no heroism, and he has more children's affection!" ”
Another friend, surnamed He, agreed, saying that Chen Duxiu now cares about the price of rice, and he didn't care about these things in the past.
Title: Chen Duxiu: From "madman" to attaching importance to family affection Chen Duxiu, who only had revolution in his eyes and didn't care about his family in the past, has now become different. In his days in Jiangjin, he cared about his wife, played with his grandchildren, served his adoptive mother's decoction every morning and evening, and even cared about the rice in the rice jar.
His friends were baffled by his changes, but he did not forget the New Culture Movement of the past, which his wife, Pan Lanzhen, discovered in mid-March 1940.
In those days, Chen Duxiu often sat quietly and depressed, and when he heard his wife ask him why he was sad, he came back to his senses. He made himself a cup of strong tea, and then tearfully found some pieces of paper.
He wrote on a piece of paper: "Since ancient times, no one has died, nothing is nothing!" However, I can't help but feel deeply about Mr. Cai Xiaomin's death, justice, and personal feelings! ”
Chen Duxiu's changes have made people see his transformation from a "madman" to an emphasis on family affection.
The intersection of two hearts: Cai Yuanpei and Chen Duxiu Cai Yuanpei and Chen Duxiu, these two legendary figures, have very different personalities, but they come together because of their common ideals and ambitions.
One is a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang, who was admitted to Xiucai at the age of 16, and then went all the way to the middle and jinshi, and entered the Hanlin Academy before the age of 30, and was respected by the world. One is a "rebel" of feudal culture, who hates Baguwen and the imperial examination, but at the age of 17, he won the first place in Xiucai with a random article, but later fell off the list and missed the scientific examination.
However, the fates of the two are intertwined by a common ideal of national salvation. At the beginning of the 20th century, after the invasion of China by the Eight-Nation Alliance, Tsarist Russia began to covet China's northeast region again.
In the late Qing Dynasty, he signed a lot of treaties that humiliated the country, which made Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei angry. Since then, they have founded "National Day" and "Alarm Bell" respectively, hoping to awaken more people's national consciousness through the power of newspapers.
In a Huaxinghui uprising, Cai Yuanpei and Chen Duxiu were involved, although the two had never met, their beliefs and actions had long been known to each other.
This uprising brought the two hearts closer together. Although they have different personalities, they all have a heart to save the country, and although they have different destinies, they are all fighting for the future of the nation.
This is Cai Yuanpei and Chen Duxiu, two heroic sympathizers, who use their actions to tell us that only by uniting together can we save the country and become strong.
In their laboratories in Shanghai, they are on a dangerous mission: to test explosives, preparing to protect the country by assassinating the late Qing minister. Although it is uncertain whether this operation will succeed, their actions reflect the responsibility and responsibility of the cultural people of that era.
In the end, despite the failure of the assassination plan, Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei became confidants through a shared experience. During this period, Chen Duxiu was only 25 years old, while Cai Yuanpei was 11 years older than him.
They each took different paths: Chen Duxiu went to Japan to study, and then returned to Shanghai to found Youth Magazine (later renamed New Youth); Cai Yuanpei, on the other hand, went to Germany to study, and later entered the education department and gradually rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the president of Peking University.
When Cai Yuanpei began to look for a suitable candidate for the dean of liberal arts, he decided to ask two old friends from the Beijing academic community, who both recommended Chen Duxiu. At this time, Chen Duxiu was busy in Beijing for the affairs of "New Youth", together with Wang Mengzou, a fellow villager in Anhui.
Cai Yuanpei visited Chen Duxiu twice at the Zhongxi Hotel, and finally succeeded in convincing him to become the dean of arts at Peking University. Although Chen Duxiu had concerns about this position, his social status could not be compared with Cai Yuanpei, and in the end, he was moved by Cai Yuanpei's sincerity and determination and accepted the challenge.
Amid the cheers of Peking faculty and students, Chen Duxiu began his work at Peking University, but he knew that it would not be easy to gain a foothold in such an environment.
Cai Yuanpei is Chen Duxiu's Bole, he doesn't ask about party beliefs, he only seeks advanced knowledge; Don't ask about personal utilitarianism, just seek the gathering of famous teachers; Don't ask about temporary gains and losses, just seek long-term impact.
He hired famous masters of the New Culture Movement such as Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu, Qian Xuantong, and Lu Xun, as well as old-fashioned masters of Chinese studies such as Gu Hongming, Liu Shipei, and Huang Jigang, in order to maintain the academic balance of Peking University.
Chen Duxiu knew that Cai Yuanpei was not easy, so he was cautious in his words during Peking University, which was his respect for Cai Yuanpei. However, in the end, Chen Duxiu left Peking University because of the pressure of the diehards, and Cai Yuanpei had to remove Chen Duxiu from his position as a senior, but at the same time guaranteed that Chen Duxiu was still a member of Peking University.
Chen Duxiu was a very proud person, and soon he left Peking University silently. After that, because he offended the warlord many times, Cai Yuanpei's president of Peking University couldn't do it anymore, so he could only temporarily leave Peking University and prepare to go to France for inspection.
I think about how beautiful he was when he took office, but when it was time to leave, there were fewer and fewer people willing to associate with him. When Chen Duxiu heard about it, he did something that many people did not expect: he notified all his Peking University colleagues in Shanghai to set up a table for a practice banquet in a very high-end restaurant.
The years passed, and by the time they drank at the same table, they were no longer young. At the banquet, Chen Duxiu, who was over 40 years old, recalled the years of Peking University, raised his glass, raised his tone, and said something like this: "Since Cai Yuanpei became the president, he has been trying his best to expand Peking University, but the resistance from all parties is getting bigger and bigger, and even when he was in power in the Anfu Club, he thought about how to confront Peking University every day.
And Mr. Cai Yuanpei's energy is spent on dealing with opponents, which is two-thirds. But this can be seen from Cai Yuanpei's later reminiscences. ”
The world calls him "eight-faced" or "good man", but Cai Yuanpei's difficulties, Chen Duxiu is clear. When Chen Duxiu left Peking University, many people felt worthless for him, thinking that Cai Yuanpei invited him, but failed to protect him.
But Chen Duxiu did not complain, he bowed to Cai Yuanpei dignifiedly, and then left Peking University. Cai Yuanpei died in another country, and Chen Duxiu lost two sons in a row because of the revolution, and he was imprisoned several times.
In order to catch him, the Kuomintang even offered a reward of 30,000 oceans. In August 1937, at the age of 60, he ended his last prison sentence and arrived in Jiangjin, Chongqing.
And when Chen Duxiu regained his freedom, Cai Yuanpei was already 70 years old, and he boarded a cruise ship to Hong Kong. At this time, he was completely hopeless about the Kuomintang authorities.
All his earlier good wishes, including education to save the country and science and technology to save the country, have become "illusions" under the corruption of the Kuomintang authorities. The huge ** can't accommodate an educator.
Apart from leaving, Cai Yuanpei has no other way out.
Cai Yuanpei, because of financial difficulties, although he is seriously ill, he has never done a thorough **. In the early morning of March 1940, he suddenly became dizzy and fell, spitting blood from his mouth.
The family immediately took him to the hospital, where doctors at the time thought he was just suffering from stomach problems. However, soon after, he began to have a lot of blood in his stool. When the doctors learned that he was the famous Cai Yuanpei, they said: "We must save him at all costs!" ”
However, Cai Yuanpei no longer cares about life and death, he just left such a last word: "All kinds of accidents in the world are ...... by people for their own interests."We must save the country with morality and academics......After saying "save the country" and "save the country" several times, he passed away at the age of 72 (one year old).
After the bad news was reported back to the mainland, patriots from all walks of life lamented it. It was years before people understood what they had lost. On March 10, more than 5,000 people in Hong Kong came to say goodbye, and the procession was lined up on the road.
However, Chen Duxiu was unable to attend, and even if he learned the news, he could not afford to pay his way to Hong Kong. Both of them were destitute, and so was Mr. Li Dazhao.
Until mid-March, He Zhiyu, a representative of Peking University, specially rushed to Chongqing to see Chen Duxiu, and brought a letter from the Peking University Alumni Association, which read: "Mr. Wang wrote a commemorative article for President Cai!" ”
Chen Duxiu readily agreed and wrote "Mr. Cai Xiaomin's Reflections after His Death", which was his only eulogy to the former president of Peking University. In the article, Chen Duxiu commented that Cai Yuanpei was a good man who could not be indispensable, but sometimes he stubbornly insisted on his ideas, albeit with a mild attitude.
He said: "Mr. Cai is gone, his friends, his students, and all those who mourn Mr. Cai should obey him." This is a word that Chen Duxiu never appears in his article.
Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei, two people who bravely shouldered the responsibility of history and led that generation of young people to take the first step in the storm. Although their personalities are very different, they all share a deep sense of patriotism.
Cai Yuanpei's "gentleness" hides stubbornness and strength, while Chen Duxiu adheres to his principles in the face of difficulties and is not afraid of the powerful. His backbone and persistence deserve our admiration.
In the final stage of Chen Duxiu's life, he still insisted on his beliefs and told his wife not to use his reputation to sell for money. His last words make people deeply feel his persistence and openness.
Today, we still miss them, and their spirit will always inspire us.
