On February 4, the groundbreaking activities of the Zhangzhou-Shantou high-speed railway were held simultaneously at Shantou Station in Shantou City, Guangdong Province and Dongshan Station in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province. On the same day, the leaders of Guangdong and Fujian provinces attended and announced the start of construction of the project.

After completion, the Zhangshan high-speed railway will help further improve the southeast coastal high-speed rail corridor, accelerate the connection between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Guangdong-Fujian-Zhejiang urban agglomeration, promote the coordination and linkage of major regional strategies, better drive the development of regions along the line, and help change the unbalanced and uncoordinated development of urban and rural areas in Guangdong.

The Zhangshan high-speed railway is an important part of the coastal corridor of the main channel of the national "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed railway, and it is also a key node to open up the passenger passage of the Guangzhou-Shanwei-Shantou-Zhangzhou-Xiamen-Fuzhou southeast coastal high-speed railway.

The project has a total length of 175 kilometers, including 48 kilometers in Guangdong, with Shantou, Shantou East (reserved), Raoping South, Zhao'an South, Dongshan, Zhangpu, Zhangzhou and other stations, and is scheduled to be completed and opened to traffic in 2028. At that time, the high-speed rail can be realized from Xiamen to Guangzhou in more than 2 hours, saving nearly half of the time compared with now, which is of great significance for strengthening the communication between eastern Guangdong and the core areas of the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta, and breaking the "bottleneck" of regional high-speed rail development.
