Nicaragua applied to join the case against Israel

According to AFP on February 8, the United Nations International Court of Justice said on the same day that Nicaragua has asked to formally join South Africa in the genocide case against Israel. In the hotly contested hearing, Managua claimed that Nicaragua had "interests of a legal nature".

The Central American country announced last month plans to join Pretoria's request for intervention, and Pretoria took Israel to the United Nations International Court of Justice, the report said.

South Africa, which has long been a vocal voice in support of the Palestinian cause, accuses Israel's military operations in Gaza of violating the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted in 1948.

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, confirmed on the 8th that Managua had filed its own application for intervention on January 23.

Two weeks ago, judges of the International Court of Justice issued a series of emergency measures saying that Israel must prevent acts of genocide in its war with Hamas, but did not call for an end to the fighting.

In its application for intervention, Nicaragua called on the judges of the International Court of Justice to find that Israel "has violated and continues to violate its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" and to "cease acts or measures that may kill or continue to kill Palestinians".

It can take months or even years to determine whether Israel's military operations have truly violated the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. (Compiled by Shen Jian).
