Gao Yubao was born in 1927 in Sunjiatun Village, Wafangdian, Liaoning Province. Due to his family's poverty, he dropped out of school after only one month. Later in life, he worked as a laborer, studied carpentering, and joined the Northeast Field Army in 1947 as a PLA soldier. In the army, he heard the story of Gorky, which inspired him to begin to study Gorky and write about his own experiences as a child. However, Gao Yubao has only been in school for a month, and he does not know how to write. However, this did not stop him from continuing to create. He uses painting as an alternative to express his story, for example, when he wrote "Chicken Crow in the Middle of the Night", he replaced words with a "half" character with half a steamed bun drawn, a "night" character with a star drawn, a "chicken" character with a chicken drawn, and a "call" character with a big mouth. The story painted by Gao Yubao quickly spread among the troops and was deeply loved by his comrades-in-arms. Still, Gao realized that this was just a stopgap measure, and that if he wanted to actually write a book, he needed to learn more about words.
Gao Yubao knew that in order to really write a book, he needed to learn more words, so he begged people everywhere to teach him how to write. However, some interesting stories happened along the way. Once, Gao Yubao saw an old gentleman and thought that he had sharp eyes and must be educated, so he happily chased after him and asked for advice on writing. But the old gentleman was frightened by Gao Yubao's appearance with a gun in his hand and fled in a hurry. In order to catch up with him, Gao Yubao chased for several miles, and finally became so tired that his legs became weak. The old gentleman thought that Gao Yubao was here to rob him, so he hurriedly took out the money on his body and handed it to Gao Yubao, begging him to let him go. Gao Yubao then explained that he was a PLA and not a bad guy. Another time, Gao Yubao turned to the column commander Wu Kehua for help. That day, Gao Yubao encountered a few words that he couldn't write, so he went out to ask for help. It happened that Wu Kehua rode over, Gao Yubao didn't know him, and mistakenly thought he was an ordinary soldier, so he stopped him and asked how to write the characters. Wu Kehua was on his way when he was stopped by a soldier and was a little surprised, so he asked Gao Yubao what was the matter. After Gao Yubao finished telling about his situation, Wu Kehua's guards heard the news and stopped Gao Yubao from continuing to disturb Wu Kehua. Gao Yubao felt panicked because of this, he didn't expect that he actually stopped the column commander, and now he had to face punishment. However, Wu Kehua did not criticize him, on the contrary, he praised Gao Yubao's enthusiasm for learning and said that he was better than those guards. In the end, Wu Kehua personally taught Gao Yubao those words.
After a year and a half, Gao Yubao finally completed "Gao Yubao", a book with 250,000 words. In the process of creation, the story of Gao Yubao has been widely circulated among the troops, and even the General Political Department learned about it. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Gao Yubao was summoned to Beijing and collaborated with a writer to revise the manuscript and prepare it for publication. With the joint efforts of the two, the manuscript was finalized. On the question of the title of the book, there are various opinions. The director of the General Political Department personally read the book, he thought it was very well written, and proposed to give it the title "Gao Yubao". In 1955, the book began to be distributed nationwide, and it quickly became a sensation. Since then, the book has been translated into more than a dozen languages and published in many countries around the world, becoming a representative work of proletarian literature. In 1992, Gao Yubao wrote "Gao Yubao's Sequel" and won the Literature Award of the Three Northeast Provinces. However, in 2019, Gao Yubao died of illness at the age of 92.
I was deeply moved by Ko's creative process. Although he only attended school for a month and was illiterate, he persevered in writing a book through drawing and asking for help from others. His story shows us that when a person faces difficulties, he should have a never-give-up mentality and be brave enough to pursue his dreams no matter how difficult it is. Gao Yubao's persistence and hard work eventually paid off, and his work became a classic. Through Gao Yubao's story, we should also see the importance of learning and our determination to continuously improve ourselves. No matter what kind of predicament we are in, as long as we persevere in learning and working hard, we can overcome difficulties and achieve success.
In addition, Ko's story also shows the mutual help and kindness between people. He actively sought the help of others, spared no effort to ask for advice from others, and received support and guidance from many people. The entanglements and misunderstandings he encountered are presented in a humorous way, and at the same time express people's desire for knowledge and culture.
In the end, "Gao Yubao" is full of an optimistic spirit and hope for the future. After a long period of hard work and revision, the book spread through publication and became a striking work. Not only did it gain widespread attention and recognition at home and abroad, but it also set an example for proletarian literature, showing that an ordinary person could create exceptional works through hard work and perseverance.
Gao Yubao's story tells us that no matter what our starting point is, as long as we have dreams and goals, and strive for them, we can create our own glory. We should draw courage and strength from it, believe in our own abilities, strive to pursue our dreams, and create our own wonderful life. At the same time, we should also maintain a humble and positive attitude of learning from others, helping each other and growing together.
