Since the supreme leader of the DPRK made fiery remarks against South Korea in his New Year's Day speech, inter-Korean relations have deteriorated sharply and even evolved into relations between hostile countries. According to Reuters, the North Korean side conducted a firepower covering exercise on the 5th, firing more than 200 artillery shells, and tensions reappeared on the border. The shells landed on the side of the North Koreans, but for South Korea, which had experienced the artillery battle on Yeonpyeong Island, the move was undoubtedly a threat. The South Korean side immediately took action to urgently evacuate the residents of the border and ensure their safety.

The firepower coverage exercise actually occurred due to the impact of recent joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. According to US media reports, the United States and South Korea conducted a week-long military exercise near the North Korean border, using tanks, armored vehicles and heavy equipment for live-fire training. In response, the DPRK strongly condemned the military provocations by the United States and South Korea, and warned that if the enemy launches a provocation, it will take tough countermeasures. Therefore, the North Korean side's artillery drill can be seen as a natural reaction to the South Korean exercise.

In the face of North Korea's firepower coverage exercises, South Korea had to act quickly to evacuate border residents to ensure the safety of their lives. However, behind North Korea's signal of war, South Korea also faces dilemmas and choices.

On the one hand, South Korea is dependent on the United States and wants its military support. However, in the current international situation, the energy and resources of the United States have been involved in the two conflicts between Palestine and Israel and Russia and Ukraine, and it is difficult to provide sufficient military reinforcements to South Korea. Moreover, the military provocation of the United States against South Korea is also one of the reasons that led the DPRK to take fire coverage exercises. Therefore, South Korea should not rely on the United States, but should consider improving relations with its neighbor China to seek more support and help.

On the other hand, South Korea needs to keep a certain distance from the United States in its policy toward North Korea and not blindly follow its military actions. During his administration, Moon Jae-in actively promoted the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and engaged in a historic dialogue with North Korea. Such a policy would reduce confrontation with the DPRK, reduce tensions and create conditions for a peaceful settlement. If South Korea once again makes the situation bigger and triggers conflict, the consequences could be very serious, and there may be no one to save them.

The current tensions in inter-Korean relations are a serious challenge for the entire Northeast Asian region. At this critical juncture, South Korea needs to recognize that peace is the only option and take concrete action to reduce tensions.

First, South Korea needs to strengthen cooperation with China to jointly promote the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. China has always advocated resolving the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue and providing a guarantee for peace on the Korean Peninsula. The ROK should make full use of the foundation of mutual trust with China, deepen cooperation, and work together to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Secondly, South Korea should be vigilant against US military provocations on the North Korean issue and keep a certain distance from them. Only by thinking independently and formulating an independent policy toward the DPRK can we truly seek to maximize the interests of the ROK's own security and development.

Finally, South Korea needs to treat the DPRK peacefully and resolve existing issues through dialogue and consultation. Lasting peace and stability can be achieved only through dialogue to resolve differences.

In short, the current tension in inter-Korean relations requires the joint efforts of all parties to alleviate it. As an important party to the Korean Peninsula, the ROK should actively play its role and contribute to the maintenance of regional peace and stability. We believe that through cooperation and efforts, peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia will be realized.
