Out of the fish! "Approaching the Spring Festival, the cold-water fish farm in Hongzhuang Village, Xiaguanying Town, Qian'an City, Hebei Province ushered in a bumper harvest, and the workers were busy selling fish to the market.

Ma Haijun, a worker in Lihe Agricultural Development in Qian'an City, located in Hongzhuang Village, grabbed a sturgeon and put it in a bag, then filled it with water, sealed it, and injected oxygen. "The fish in this package can survive for two or three days, and they are all alive and kicking until they are put into the pot. Ma Haijun said that such fresh and delicious sturgeon in the Spring Festival market is in short supply.

Hongzhuang Village is not near the river or lake, and there is no reservoir around it, so a cold-water fish farm can be built here, relying on the cold water resources of more than 100 acres of abandoned mine pits in the village.

The abandoned pit here is 100 meters deep, and the low-temperature water at the bottom of the pit is only about 11 degrees Celsius when the weather is hottest in summer, and after water quality testing, the pH, heavy metals and nitrite and other indicators are qualified, which is very suitable for breeding rainbow trout, golden trout, sturgeon and other cold-water fish. Gao Wei, the person in charge of Lihe Agricultural Development in Qian'an City, said.

In 2019, Gao Wei aimed at the innate conditions here, devoted himself to the transformation and utilization of abandoned mines in the village, and developed cold-water fish farming, and has now built 27 fish breeding tanks, producing about 300,000 catties of fish per year, mainly sold to the Beijing-Tianjin market.

Pay off old environmental debts, and no new debts can be owed. The reporter saw that the aquaculture tail water here was returned to the pit for recycling after treatment. Photovoltaic power generation facilities are also laid above the fish tank, and the electricity generated can not only meet the operation of the breeding equipment, but also generate about 200,000 yuan of income per year for the surplus electricity to be sold online.

Gao Wei has developed and utilized three such abandoned mines. In Shangzhuangzi Village, Xiaguanying Town, Qian'an City, the originally abandoned mine pit has been built into an ecological breeding base of more than 100 acres to breed grass carp, sea bass and other fish. In spring and summer, the company will also rely on floating materials to plant lettuce and water spinach, realizing the "symbiosis of fish and vegetables, the combination of planting and breeding".

Wang Yahui, the relevant person in charge of the Tangshan Food and Drug Comprehensive Inspection and Testing Center, told reporters that in order to ensure food safety during the Spring Festival, the staff went to the farm some time ago to take 3 catties of rainbow trout, golden trout, sturgeon and other samples and brought them back to the laboratory.

In the past, the village relied on mining for a while, but after the mining was completed, the remaining pits were like scars. Now, after restoration and redevelopment, not only has the environment become beautiful, but also a new industry has been developed. Ma Haijun said that thanks to the establishment of the fish farm, he can have a stable job at his doorstep.

Qian'an thrived because of the mines, but it also left hundreds of abandoned mines in the local area due to years of mining. In recent years, in the process of implementing mine restoration and governance, Qian'an has explored the integration of ecological restoration and industrial transformation, and has implemented more than 30,000 acres of mine restoration, which has revitalized abandoned mines.
