For the sake of victory, for the sake of positions, fire at me! This is the roar of Wang Cheng in the battle of Shangganling in the movie "Heroes' Children". Unexpectedly, in the Battle of Laoshan, there was a soldier named Wei Changjin, who was blind in his left eye and seriously injured, like Wang Cheng, resolutely shouted the sentence "Shoot at me", and he was also called "contemporary Wang Cheng". In the end, the troops really opened fire on the positions when they had no choice. So, did Wei Changjin die in the end?
Wei Changjin is an ordinary soldier in the 67th squad of the 6th Company, 2nd Platoon, 4th Squad of the 595th Regiment of the 199th Division of the Jinan Military Region.
In January 1985, Wei Changjin's unit received an order to go to the Laoshan front to participate in the battle.
At that time, Wei Changjin was busy making steamed buns in the cooking class. Originally, he could have stayed in the rear, but after receiving the news, he was the first to sign up for the army to fight, asking to go to the front line to serve the country.
Wei Changjin was not actually a cooking soldier, but after he was conscripted into the army in 1983, he not only worked hard to improve his military skills, but also sought political advancement, so he stood out from the crowd of recruits.
One of the reasons why Wei Changjin set high demands on himself was because the 199th Division was a unit with fine traditions and a glorious history. The 199th Division was first established in Jinggangshan, which not only left many legendary achievements in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, but also made great achievements on the Korean battlefield, so it is also known as the "Heroic Division".
As a soldier of the 199th Division, Wei Changjin not only felt extremely honored for his unit, but also had strict requirements for himself in order to be worthy of such a heroic division.
In the end, the leadership approved Wei Changjin's request for war.
In March of the same year, Wei Changjin rushed to the front line of Laoshan in Yunnan with his troops, and entered the battle amid the rumbling of artillery.
On May 18, Wei Changjin's 2nd platoon was ordered to take up the defense task of Heights 577.
Heights 577 are the most advanced positions in the Old Son Nala area. However, there is a difference between this and other positions in terms of geological structure, it belongs to karst landforms, so there is no way to build trenches, bunkers and fire firing fortifications on the high ground, Wei Changjin and his soldiers can only rely on the existing natural caves, rock crevices and so on as cover.
Due to the strategic importance of Heights 577, the defeated Vietnamese troops repeatedly launched counterattacks to recapture Heights 577. Fortunately, Wei Changjin and the soldiers were very tenacious in the battle, so that the Vietnamese army could not succeed.
However, the Vietnamese army did not rest on its laurels. In the early hours of 19 July, they sent two battalions and one reinforced company to launch another assault on Heights 577. In the midst of the rumbling artillery fire, Wei Changjin and his soldiers were really startled when they saw thousands of Vietnamese troops charging towards their outposts.
After all, there were only 5 of them, and the other party obviously crushed them in numbers. In addition, before the charge, the Vietnamese army kept throwing shells on the 577 heights. In the face of the enemy's ferocious fire attack, it was almost impossible for Wei Changjin and his soldiers to hold the high ground.
However, Wei Changjin and the soldiers didn't have time to think about it, because they had only one belief in their hearts, that is, to hold their positions and hold the No. 6 sentry post.
However, due to the outnumbered enemy and the dense artillery fire of the Vietnamese army, Wei Changjin and his soldiers could only hide in the cave that was crumbling by the shells. Only when the Vietnamese artillery fire weakened did they rush out of the cave and throw grenades and blasters at the Vietnamese troops. However, it didn't last long before Wei Jingjin was shot in his left shoulder and collarbone. He didn't have time to bandage, so he continued to pick up his submachine gun and fired at the Vietnamese soldiers who were rushing to the front. The other fighters were also extremely tenacious and brave, and finally under their firepower, the Vietnamese army had to retreat.
Soon, the artillery fire of the Vietnamese army continued to land and blossom on the 577 heights. As the ground shook and the mountains shook, a cannonball landed at the entrance of the cave that Wei Changjin and his soldiers used as shelter. For a while, the cave collapsed, the smoke was filled, Wei Changjin was knocked to the ground by the impact force generated by **, and his steel helmet also fell to the ground.
He looked up, felt a sharp pain in his left eye, and involuntarily touched it. When he touched it, he found that the left eye socket was empty, and at the same time, he also touched a flesh bump hanging under the left eye socket. He knew that the eyeball must have been wounded by shrapnel and fell out. So, he endured the pain, stuffed his eyeballs back stiffly, and wrapped them a few times with the gauze bag in the first aid kit.
At this moment, another shell landed in front of Wei Changjin's left. A lot of shrapnel penetrated Wei Changjin's body under the powerful impact, and he fainted in pain at that time.
Soon, Wei Changjin woke up again, he looked around with his right eye, and found that the squad leader Cheng Yushan and the other two fighters had died. And his comrade-in-arms Miao Tingrong was also lying in a pool of blood not far from him, moaning constantly.
So, Wei Changjin hurriedly ran to Miao Tingrong's side and prepared to bandage his wounds. But Miao Tingrong said with difficulty: "Leave me alone, the enemy is about to come up, you must hold the position." ”
After speaking, Miao Tingrong fell into a coma.
At this time, more than a dozen Vietnamese troops had already attacked the position. Facing the shouting Vietnamese army, Wei Changjin knew that he had no way to engage them in close combat. So, he picked up the walkie-talkie and got in touch with the company headquarters, reported the situation to the platoon commander, and asked the artillery unit to hurry up and fire at the post where he was.
The platoon commander was quite unbearable, repeatedly advised him to hold on a little longer, and said that the troops would come to reinforcements immediately.
But seeing that more and more Vietnamese troops attacked the position, Wei Changjin was so anxious that he shouted: "The enemy has rushed up, for the sake of the position, quickly fire at me!."Open fire!Open fire!”
Soon, the artillery fire of our troops fell one after another on the 577 heights. Those Vietnamese soldiers who were triumphant were blown to pieces by this sudden artillery fire. Seeing that the situation was not good, the Vietnamese army hurriedly retreated, leaving only a dozen corpses that had no time to take away.
However, after all, the Vietnamese army was outnumbered, and after redeployment, they once again launched a charge towards the 577 heights. At that time, Wei Changjin was still alive, and when he saw it, he immediately reported the situation to the command through the walkie-talkie. After receiving the order, the artillery unit launched another fire attack on the Vietnamese army, and the Vietnamese army had no way to get close to the 577 heights.
The battle continued until 8 o'clock in the evening, when reinforcements arrived.
Seeing that the best opportunity to seize the 577 heights had been lost, the Vietnamese army hurriedly retreated. By the time the reinforcements found Wei Changjin, who was holding his position alone, he was already lying in a pool of blood, dying.
Despite this, when Wei Changjin saw that there was only one stretcher, he asked that Miao Tingrong, who was seriously injured, be sent down the mountain first. But the fighters saw that he was also seriously wounded, so the two fighters took turns and carried him down the mountain.
After Wei Changjin was taken to the hospital, doctors immediately resuscitated him. They found that Wei Changjin had 22 serious injuries on his body, and that he had been hit by bullets in his left eye and right chest. I can't help but marvel at the fact that he can still hold the position alone for 11 hours under such circumstances, which is simply a great miracle.
After being in a coma for 7 days and 7 nights, and after 15 major surgeries, Wei Changjin finally saved the day. But because his left eyeball was necrotic, his left eye was no longer bright. There are also 4 pieces of shrapnel that can only remain in his body due to their proximity to nerves.
After the war, the ** Military Commission awarded Wei Changjin a first-class meritorious service and awarded the honorary title of "Battle Hero".
And as a heroic model of the People's Liberation Army, he was arranged to make one report after another on the heroic deeds of major military regions.
While everyone was moved, they affectionately called him "contemporary Wang Cheng". His heroic deeds have also been included in the first set of "Protecting the Frontier and Offering Youth Heroes", and it has also been compiled into the ideological education textbook of primary schools.
During that period, Wei Changjin was also selected as the "loveliest person in the new era" and was received by state leaders in the Great Hall of the People. At the same time, he was invited to give lectures throughout the country, as activities to learn from heroes were being carried out throughout the country.
Wei Changjin said that at that time, he was like a big star, and he walked to ** with applause and flowers. But the more this happened, the more ashamed he felt. He always felt that he was lucky to survive. If there is a real hero, it must be those soldiers who shed their last drop of blood on the battlefield.
To Wei Changjin's delight, although he was blind in his left eye, he remained in the army and continued to perform his duties as a soldier.
When he was an instructor, four soldiers were admitted to military academies, and three soldiers became the key training targets for young cadres.
When he was an instructor in the army, he gave political work lessons to grassroots soldiers in combination with actual combat cases, and also brought out many outstanding backbones.
When he was serving as deputy political commissar of a military sub-district, he also carried out a thorough investigation of the grassroots armed forces, implemented hardware facilities, and reformed the ranks of grassroots cadres.
In short, whether on the battlefield or in the army, Wei Changjin has made remarkable achievements.
In 2017, Wei Changjin, as a combat hero, was awarded the "August 1st Medal", the highest honor of the army, for his great contribution to the country and the army. When accepting the medal, Wei Changjin was very excited, saying that this medal did not belong to him alone, but to the millions of soldiers who fought against Vietnam.
Everyone is afraid of death, but for the sake of victory, Wei Changjin shouted out words like "shoot at me", putting life and death aside. This is the great spirit of a Chinese people! It is precisely because of the thousands of Wei Changjin that our People's Liberation Army has become an invincible army, protecting the security of the country and the happiness of the people!
