Sun Jun was born in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province in October 1926, graduated from the Structural Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in June 1949, taught at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 1951 to 1952, and taught at Tongji University in September 1952 after the adjustment of the national faculties. He used to be a member of the Council of Tongji University, the vice chairman of the Academic Committee of Tongji University, and the head of the Department of Structural Engineering.

Sun Jun has long been engaged in teaching, scientific research and engineering practice in the fields of geomechanics and engineering, tunnel and underground engineering, and has profound academic attainments and made outstanding contributions in the theory and application of geotechnical rheological mechanics, viscoelastic-plastic theory of underground structures, seismic and blast dynamics of underground protection engineering, and urban environmental geoengineering. Sun Jun majored in civil engineering at university, and because of his good knowledge of Russian, he was appointed by the university as a technical interpreter for Snitko, a bridge expert from the former Soviet Union who worked in Tongji. In 1960, in order to meet the urgent need of the country for underground engineering professionals, Tongji University appointed Sun Jun to be responsible for the establishment of the first major of "tunnel and underground construction engineering" at home and abroad, and served as the director of the first professional teaching and research department. Since then, he has been concentrating on the field of underground structures, and has been willing to dedicate himself to more than a year. He presided over and was responsible for the construction of China's first extra-large underground aircraft cavern and the supporting underground oil storage cavern project; As the person in charge of the overall design, he undertook the survey, design and construction of the pilot subway station project in Shanghai, and served as the technical expert for the construction of Shanghai's first Huangpu River Dapu Road Tunnel, Yan'an East Road Tunnel, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Ningbo and other cities.

The needs of the country are the direction of my efforts. In the vast land of the motherland, Sun Jun's busy figure is left everywhere. He said: "We must not shut ourselves up in the academic hall and do empty learning, theory to theory, and space to air, but we must let theory take root, blossom, and bear fruit in production practice." ”

As early as 1963, in the final review of 17 national major projects, the project "viscoelastic plastic theory of underground structures and its engineering application practice" led by 37-year-old associate professor Sun Jun won the first place. The appraisal opinion reads: "The results of this project have reached the international level in terms of the breadth and depth of theoretical discussions; What is more valuable is that the research results can be applied to engineering practice in a timely manner, and considerable economic and social benefits have been obtained. ”

In Sun Jun's view, doing scientific research is to raise the problems in engineering to the level of theory, and to give scientific answers from the essence and mechanism, rather than just copying the "norms" to solve them. After the phased results of the research come out, it is necessary to consider how to apply the results to engineering practice, and there is often a long distance between the two.
