Two years after the outbreak of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China has stepped in once again, demonstrating its unique role in international affairs.
China's spokesperson Mao Ning recently announced that China will continue to play a role in promoting a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, and starting from March 2, China's special representative for Eurasian affairs will launch a new round of shuttle diplomacy, planning to visit Russia, EU headquarters, Poland, Ukraine, Germany and France.
This is not the first time that China has sent a special envoy for Eurasian affairs to mediate, as the Chinese envoy visited several countries and the EU headquarters in mid-May last year, providing a rare opportunity for communication.
No substantive progress was made in the last mediation session, and there were considerable differences between the parties on the terms of the peace talks. Now the situation has changed, Ukraine and the West are facing a grim situation, and the Ukrainian army is in obvious decline. The big ** in the past ended in failure, the Russian army captured the important town of Avdeyevka in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian army retreated, and the Russian side is said to have captured more than 200 Ukrainian soldiers.
This series of facts shows that Russia's strength cannot be underestimated, and the development of the war is beneficial to the Russian side.
Against this backdrop, China has once again stepped in to provide an opportunity for mediation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made it clear at the Munich Security Conference that although China is not a party to the Ukraine crisis, China firmly opposes taking advantage of the situation and advocates peace talks to resolve the dispute. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba also expressed the hope that China will continue to play its role in promoting peace.
The beginning of a new round of China's diplomatic mediation efforts is forceful.
Looking back at the mediation in May last year, although no substantive progress was made, the timing of China's mediation this time was different. The international community generally expects a peaceful solution to the crisis, and the Ukrainian side and the West may be more open to peace talks. It is hoped that China will make more contributions to the peaceful settlement of the Ukraine crisis through new mediation actions.
