Mondo Social Updated on 2024-03-04

March 3, 2024 is the 11th World Wildlife Day, and this year's global theme is:"Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation"., which aims to call on people to explore digital innovation, raise awareness of the latest applications of digital technologies in wildlife conservation and **, and the impact of digital interventions on ecosystems and communities around the world. The theme of China's activity is "Building a Smart Wildlife Protection System".

About World Wildlife Day:

On 20 December 2013, the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3 March as World Wildlife Day, which was also the day of the signing of the 1973 International Convention on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This important anniversary not only gives us an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of wild animals and plants, but also allows us to build scientific awareness of the protection of the earth's biodiversity, raise people's awareness of wild animals and plants, understand nature, and save rare and endangered wild animals and plants.

Digital innovation and wildlife conservation

The development of digital technologies has driven the global digital transformation process, and by 2023, two-thirds of the world's population will be online, a 45% increase from five years ago. Digital technology innovation not only improves the efficiency of wildlife conservation, but also builds a bridge between humans and nature. AI identification, infrared cameras and other technologies monitor the distribution, reproduction, species diversity and other information of wild animals, providing a scientific basis for ecological environment management and protection strategy formulation. The new platform and webcast technology break the limitations of time and space, provide an information sharing platform for global animal and plant conservationists and researchers, and make information exchange more convenient and effective; VR AR technology brings an immersive visual experience, shortens the distance between humans and wildlife, and makes it easier to awaken the public's awareness of wildlife protection. Databases and technologies provide an intelligent management approach for wildlife conservation, and the application of big data incorporates species collection and conservation into global strategies. And the impact of digital innovation on wildlife conservation goes far beyond that.

Wildlife protection is in action

The Shanghai Botanical Garden mainly introduces wild plants in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and collects and selects a large number of horticultural varieties for urban greening, with a total of 4,500 species and more than 6,000 varieties collected. The collection and display of flowering shrubs, perennial plants, bromeliads and cactus succulents are quite distinctive. Among them, the innovative utilization of camellia, rhododendron and magnolia traditional flower germplasm and the research on horticultural technology around the construction of Shanghai's eco-city have achieved fruitful results. In particular, the North District focuses on the conservation and display of rare and endangered plants, native plants and characteristic ornamental plants, and has built the first cold greenhouse in Shanghai.

With the efforts of researchers from the Shanghai Botanical Garden, Baohua Magnolia, an endemic rare and endangered plant in China, has effectively carried out in-situ conservation and ex-situ conservation through cuttings, grafting and low-temperature layered seed breeding technology research. As one of the top ten traditional famous flowers in China, under the inheritance of the previous generations of Shangzhi camellia people, the camellia special garden basically covers all camellia groups in China, and won the honorary title of "International Outstanding Tea Garden"; On the way to make rhododendrons bloom all over the city, the rhododendron team of Shanghai Botanical Garden took the lead in carrying out various technical research with the goal of alkali tolerance in China, and the results were remarkable.

Through monitoring, a total of 155 species of wild birds were recorded, close to 1 3 of the total recorded species in Shanghai, and the largest number of species in the parks and green spaces in Shanghai. There are as many as 15 species of amphibians and reptiles, and the population in the vast wetland environment has increased significantly year by year. There are 7 species of mammals, among which the Northeast hedgehog has been widely distributed in the park; There are more than 20 species of aquatic animals such as shrimp, crabs, snails, etc., which provide abundant food for the survival of waterbirds**; There are more than 120 species of nocturnal animals, which helps the development of the popular science brand "Secret Visit to the Night Elves" and a series of theme courses on biodiversity, and lays a data foundation for the scientific research and popularization of science in the botanical garden.

Exploration of the protection of wild animals and plants

Shanghai Botanical Garden has always actively practiced the concept of ecological civilization development, and has done a lot of work in plant protection, ex situ conservation, scientific research, popular science education and horticultural display. In recent years, in response to the construction of digital China, the Shanghai Botanical Garden has made many attempts in digital innovation. For example, in 2022, the "Secret Visit to the Night Elves" nature observation activity created an online mode, using online live broadcast technology to move this popular science activity to the screen, with more than 1.2 million views, showing a magical night botanical garden to friends of all ages, effectively disseminating the knowledge and concept of wildlife conservation; Under the influence of digitalization, the Shanghai Botanical Garden has launched an AR popular science game - "Baby" Tree Detective, which guides visitors to find and learn about rare and endangered trees in the botanical garden, and further enhances the public's awareness of nature protection. At present, the Shanghai Botanical Garden is actively exploring and practicing the innovative application of digital technologies such as new science popularization, plant collection, and plant protection.

World Wildlife Day provides an opportunity to educate people about the beauty and wonder of wildlife, pay attention to their survival, and raise awareness of wildlife conservation. The development of digital technology has provided more efficient and intelligent means for wildlife conservation, while also making knowledge and information more accessible. Let's work together to actively explore the application of digital technology in wildlife conservation, and use digital innovation to protect the beauty of biodiversity.
