Recently, some attentive members of the public have noticed that many "public toilets" in urban areas have been renamed as "public service spaces". Why the name change? How is a "public service space" different from a "public toilet"? Are members of the public accepting the name change of public toilets? The reporter visited this.

Journalists visited

Most people don't know "its name".

On April 6, the reporter entered the keyword "public service space" on the mobile phone map, and more than ten related positioning appeared.

Following the navigation, the reporter came to the "public service space" of Jinyuan Community, Pushou City, Lucheng District. The orange "public service space" text logo is more eye-catching, and there is a public toilet graphic logo next to the text sign, and there is also a small white text "public toilet" under the graphic sign. There is a conspicuous public toilet management sign at the entrance of the "public service space", and when you walk inside, there is a third toilet, which is equipped with barrier-free toilets, baby care tables, and baby toilets.

Compared with the Jinyuan community, the "public service space" of the seagull group in Gelupo District 1 is more refined. A few green wall decorations at the entrance make the public toilet hidden in it, and the warm and comfortable exterior decoration does not look like a public toilet. In addition to the "public service space" sign, there is also a "Lucheng Laborers Love Station" sign. The Love Station provides outdoor workers and passers-by with services such as drinking water, temporary rest, heating of meals and tea, heating and cooling, mobile phone charging, and temporary shelter from the rain. Near the "public service space", the reporter found a sign that still reads "public toilet".

The design of both internal and external repairs, convenient and practical supporting facilities, but the "public service space" did not leave a deep "impression" on the nearby citizens. The reporter interviewed some citizens at random, and the vast majority of them said that they did not know what a "public service space" was. "I haven't heard of it, I don't know" "What kind of departmental unit?" "Is it a space for people to rest?" "Sounds like a place for some kind of service. ”…Only one member of the public knew that it was a public toilet.

Department explained

The name was changed to match the construction of the city

The rebranding of "public toilets" to "public service spaces" is not recent. The reporter learned from the Lucheng District Environmental Sanitation Management Office that in recent years, Lucheng has actively upgraded and renovated urban public toilets, according to the current situation of public toilets, the department has implanted more diverse services through the transformation of surrounding idle spaces and corner lots, such as implanting love stations, book houses, volunteer activity rooms, etc., to optimize the service function of public toilets. In order to cooperate with the construction of urban post stations, complexes and urban renewal in Lucheng District, the public toilets renovated in Lucheng District have been renamed as "public service spaces" since 2019.

At present, there are 320 urban public toilets in Lucheng District, and more than 150 are directly managed by the District Environmental Sanitation Management Office, of which 33 have been renamed as "public service spaces". "The renovated urban public toilets not only have a beautiful appearance, but also are more humane in terms of functions and services. For the name change, Chen Dinghuan, section chief of the Environmental Sanitation Management Office of Lucheng District, said that because of the change in the service function of the public toilet, it is more appropriate to change the name to "public service space", so it is the first to test the water and change the name, and other cities have similar names such as Beijing's "Fifth Space" and Jiangsu's "Public Toilet".

Chen Dinghuan said: "Through the renovation of public toilets, the renaming and the improvement of management services, the surrounding residents have a new understanding of public toilets. ”

In addition, Chen Dinghuan told reporters: "The guide sign of the public toilet will continue to use the national standard sanitation icon graphics, which is consistent with the graphic logo on the 'public service space', and the public will also know that this is a public toilet according to the icon." ”

It is reported that in addition to Lucheng, there are also newly built public toilets in Ouhai that have begun to be renamed as "public service spaces".

Citizen voices

Whether a name change warrants mixed reviews

What do citizens think about the renaming of public toilets? The reporter interviewed some citizens.

Ms. Xie said: "Toilet is not a word of **, using 'elegant' to kidnap toilets, it is a bit too much, it is better to spend more energy to build more public toilets, and keep the public toilets clean." Ms. Chen said bluntly: "No matter how fanciful the name is, it is still a toilet, and the name of the public toilet is easy to understand. ”

Mr. Ye, a citizen, said: "It is true that the public toilet should be renovated better, but there is really no need to change the name. If you have to change the name for the purpose of adding a new service area, you can sign it separately from the public toilet, and the public toilet is called a 'public toilet', and the new service area can be named separately. ”

Mr. Tong, a citizen, believes that there is not much need for public toilets to improve their service functions, and the function of public toilets is to make people convenient, and it is impossible for people to stay here for a long time by adding other functions.

However, some members of the public expressed support for the renaming of public toilets. Ms. Fu said: "The quality of public toilets is related to the overall environmental quality and image of a city to a certain extent, but after the name change, the publicity should be in place, including some signage. ”
