RTO regenerative burner safety points

RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) is a device used to treat industrial organic waste gases, which reduces VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emissions by burning organic waste gases. However, since RTO deals with exhaust gases that may contain a variety of flammable and explosive mixed organic gases, special attention needs to be paid to safety during use. Here are some key safety points:

1.Design and construction: The safety facilities of the RTO furnace should be designed, constructed and put into use at the same time as the main project. Safety risk assessment should be carried out in the RTO furnace, especially for the complex composition of the exhaust gas, HAZOP analysis should be carried out and corresponding safety measures should be taken.

2.Pretreatment facilities: The RTO furnace can strictly control the concentration and flow rate of organic matter at the inlet of the RTO furnace by setting up buffer tanks, adjusting air volume and other pretreatment facilities to ensure relatively stable and safe operation.

3.Prevention of condensation and deposition: Effective measures should be taken to prevent condensation and deposition in the pipes and the lower chamber of the RTO furnace.

4.Ventilation measures: The RTO furnace should meet the minimum ventilation requirements through forced ventilation measures to avoid the accumulation of combustibles, tempering, etc.

5.Control system: The RTO furnace should be equipped with PLC or DCS control system to monitor and interlock the key parameters of equipment and facilities such as fans, valves, burners, furnaces and exhaust gas pipelines in real time. Critical equipment safety instrumented systems should be designed no less than SIL2 standards.

6.Electrical and instrumentation equipment: The on-site electrical instrumentation equipment of the RTO furnace should be designed in strict accordance with the explosion-proof level, and explosion-venting plates should be set in the pipeline or furnace; The RTO furnace should be equipped with short-circuit protection and grounding protection functions, and the waste gas pipeline material should pay attention to anti-static.

7.Emergency shut-off function: The RTO furnace should be equipped with an emergency shutdown of the inlet valve and exhaust valve after the power is cut off to prevent the temperature of the lower part of the regenerator from rising due to the chimney effect.

8.Standby power supply and compressed air storage tank: The RTO furnace should be provided with UPS backup power supply and compressed air storage tank. For emergency evacuation pipes with high concentrations and low ignition point substances, it is strictly forbidden to share the chimney discharge with high-temperature emptying pipes.

In addition, there are some safety precautions to be paid attention to during operation:

Prevents the volatilization of organic fluid build-up in the pipeline** and reduces the risk by reducing the wind speed and installing flame arresters.

Purge prior to ignition to remove organic matter from pipes and furnaces to avoid detonation during ignition.

Prevent equipment damage caused by sudden power failure, design emergency compressed air storage tank and UPS system.

Control the RTO incinerator outlet temperature to prevent damage to the equipment.

Ensure that the temperature in the furnace is evenly controlled to avoid overheating and affecting the life of the equipment.

Ensure the safety of operators and avoid non-related personnel approaching the RTO incinerator.

These safety measures help ensure the safe operation of RTO furnaces and reduce potential safety risks.
