Samsung SDI today announced that it will participate in the three-day Interbattery 2024 in Seoul on March 6. The company is poised to launch a suite of "supergap" battery technologies, including fast-charging and ultra-long-life batteries, as well as a mass-production-ready roadmap for all-solid-state batteries, a solution that goes beyond lithium-ion batteries.

To enrich this year's InterBattery Korea, Samsung SDI strives to consolidate its technological leadership in all-solid-state batteries, while showcasing a myriad of product lines embodied in its "super gap" technology that will lead the battery market forward.

Roadmap for mass production of all-solid-state batteries with a maximum energy density of 900 Wh L

For the first time, Samsung SDI's roadmap to mass production of an all-solid-state battery (ASB) with the industry's highest energy density of 900Wh L was made public.

Known to many as the Dream Battery, the ASB is a next-generation battery solution filled with a solid electrolyte that has significant results in reducing the risk of fire and increasing range.

This roadmap illustrates the preparation of Samsung SDI from the development of ASB to mass production. Its energy density jumps 40% from the level of Samsung SDI's own prism battery product, P5, which is currently in production. Samsung's battery division plans to leverage the company's proprietary solid electrolyte and anode-less technology to achieve industry-leading energy density in its ASB products, which enables higher cathode capacity.

In December 2023, Samsung SDI established an ASB commercialization team for ASB control towers. An all-solid-state battery pilot line was established last year at Samsung's SDI R&D center in Suwon, and prototype samples are currently being delivered. Samsung SDI's roadmap will show that all aspects of its 2027 plan to mass produce all-solid-state batteries are well underway, from development, production lines, project start-up, and **chain management.

Ultra-fast charging, from 8% to 80% in just 9 minutes; Long life battery of more than 20 years; The battery-to-pack platform is 20% lighter

Samsung SDI also plans to roll out its ultra-fast charging technology, which will charge from 8% to 80% in just 9 minutes, an unprecedented feat in the industry.

This is made possible by optimizing the lithium-ion transmission path and achieving low resistance. The company aims to bring this technology development to mass production by 2026. Compared to P5, this technology is expected to significantly reduce charging time.

Another technological prowess that Samsung SDI will demonstrate is its plan to develop and mass-produce battery solutions that last more than 20 years by 2029. According to the company's plan, this longer battery life, which is more than double the battery life of products currently on the market, will be achieved by enhancing the durability of battery materials.

Samsung SDI will demonstrate a prismatic battery profile that moves sideways compared to traditional top terminals to improve energy efficiency and cooling. Another eye-catching concept is CTP technology for prismatic cells. Samsung SDI is trying to show how it can reduce the number of components by more than 35% and the weight by 20%, resulting in high energy density and significant cost reduction.

Samsung SDI will demonstrate Heatless Propagation Technology, a safety feature that prevents thermal runaway propagation in the event of a fire or impact by venting hot gases through vents built into the battery.

Samsung SDI's exhibition also included its battery portfolio, covering a wide range of areas from high-end to affordable: nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) 46 PHI batteries with high nickel content, medium-nickel manganese batteries (NMX), and lithium-ion phosphate batteries (LFP).

Samsung SDI was praised for its innovative Samsung battery box and ESG campaigns

Samsung SDI's ESS solution, Samsung Battery Case (SBB), has won the ESS Battery Innovator Award in a new award launched by Interbattery in 2024. SBB is recognized in the global market in the United States and Europe for its ease of installation and advanced safety through direct injection systems.

In the exhibit reserved for the company's small battery products, visitors can check out a range of small battery applications using Samsung SDI products: high-power cylindrical batteries for gardens, power tools and vacuum cleaners, pouch batteries for IT devices such as the Galaxy S24, and batteries for wearable applications.

Samsung SDI's consistent efforts in ESG management will be showcased in a dedicated ESG-themed area. Samsung SDI became the first lithium battery manufacturer to receive a carbon footprint label and its products will be exhibited, as well as numerous achievements in environmental, social and corporate governance: the first release of the Sustainability Report in Korea in 2003, the history of listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the plan to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2025 as a member of the RE100 initiative, and the battery** work.

Yoon Ho Choi, President and CEO of Samsung SDI, said, "We are preparing for the mass production of next-generation products in various form factors, such as all-solid-state batteries, as we lead the global battery market with our unparalleled "super gap" technology.

InterBattery 2024 is an opportunity to observe Samsung's SDI differentiating technologies and efforts to make the world greener and more sustainable through our innovative technologies. ”
