According to foreign media news, Nikon has recently announced that it will wholly acquire the American movie camera company Redcom, LLC (RED), which covers 100% of RED's outstanding members' interests. Under the terms of the agreement, RED will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nikon.
RED has been a significant influence in the world of cinematography and has been at the forefront of digital cinema camera technology since its inception in 2005. The product line has evolved from the Red One 4K camera to the latest V-Raptor [X], equipped with proprietary RAW compression technology. RED cameras have become the go-to equipment for Hollywood and global camera crews due to their performance, and the latest Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, was shot with RED's V-Raptor camera.
Since its founding in 1917, Nikon has become an iconic brand in the world of photography, launching cameras and capturing many of the world's most iconic moments. Recently, Nikon was selected as the official camera brand of the International Space Station. Nikon's expertise in product development, reliability, image processing, optical technology and user interface, combined with RED's expertise in cinema cameras, including its unique image compression technology and color science, will drive innovation breakthroughs in the professional digital cinema camera market.
Nikon's acquisition of RED aims to expand its digital cinema product line, which will build on the existing business foundations and networks of both companies. As for whether Nikon will retain the RED brand or include it in the Nikon brand in the future main line, there is no definite word yet.
