Before talking about the 29th Independent Brigade of the 38th Division of the 39th Army being disarmed by the Japanese army and surrendering to Japan, let's talk about what kind of person the brigade commander Ruan Xuan Wu is.
Ruan Xuanwu, born in 1893, was born in Shucheng, Anhui Province. He served as a soldier in Duan Zhigui's department, and was sent to the sixth infantry section of the Baoding Military Academy in 1917.
After graduation, he served as a grassroots officer in the direct warlord army, and later joined Fang Zhenwu. In the summer of 1925, he was appointed head of the Fang Division. In January 1926, he served as the commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 5th Army of the Fang Division, and later went to Wuyuan and was promoted to the commander of the 1st Division of the Fang Division. In 1927, he participated in the Northern Expedition, and Nguyen served as the commander of the 1st Army of the 2nd Army, and in 1928, he was the commander of the 34th Army of the 4th Army. In April of the same year, he led his troops on the Northern Expedition and captured Beijing. In the spring of 1929, he was reappointed as the commander of the 44th Division of the 6th Route Army, and then followed Fang to Anhui, where he served as the chairman of Anhui Province, and Ruan concurrently served as the first member of Anhui Province, and in September, he was reappointed as the commander of the 10th Division.
In October 1929, the Chiang Feng War broke out, Chiang lured Fang, and then detained, Ren Ruan was the commander of the 4th Army of the rebel army, and the chairman of Anhui Province. Ruan led his army to Luoyang, rebelled against Chiang Lian Song (Zheyuan), and assumed the post of commander-in-chief of Feng's 20th Route Army. After several twists and turns, Feng was completely defeated. After the reorganization of the 29th Army, Nguyen served as a senior staff member of the military department.
In 1933, Feng organized the Anti-Japanese Allied Army, and Ruan served as the commander of the 5th Army of the Anti-Japanese Allied Army. In 1934, he served as a lieutenant general and brigade commander of the 1st Brigade, Chahar. In 1935, he served as the commander of the 39th Independent Brigade of the Army, and in 1936, the department moved to Beiyuan, Beiping.
Judging from the above experience, Ruan is a veteran general of the Northwest Army, a side of the military academy, and a loyal subordinate of Fang Zhenwu, who has had the legendary story of saving Fang by force, and has also had the embarrassing scene of being betrayed by his subordinates, and has even had the festival of cooperating with Song Zheyuan and being abandoned by Song, and even had the resentment of being betrayed by Ji Hongchang, Zhang Yinxiang, and Liang Guanying. is such a general, in the following events, the performance is not very ideal.
On July 28, 1937, Song Zheyuan hurriedly evacuated from Beiping, leaving Zhang Zizhong to clean up the mess in Pingjin.
Subsequently, the security forces of the Shi Guya Son Department were evacuated from Binh Tin Tin, and the 39th Independent Brigade of Nguyen Xuan Martial took over the defense of the Huang Temple, where the Shi Department was stationed. Ruan Xuanwu saw that the general trend was gone, so he decided to quietly take the troops away without consulting Zhang Zizhong. On the evening of the 29th, the troops were preparing to set off lightly, but their subordinates fired guns to show their opposition. This unit was originally Zhang Zizhong's descendant troops, and it was impossible for Ruan Xuanwu to take it away. Ruan also knew that what might happen next was a mutiny.
So, at noon on July 30, Ruan Xuanwu went to Beiping alone to see Zhang Zizhong, Zhang persuaded Ruan to stay, and allowed Ruan to be the commander of the city defense, but Ruan Wan refused. Zhang also asked Ruan to carefully read the statement issued by the Japanese army on the 28th: "In the city of Beiping, as long as the Chinese side does not create chaos or provoke war, our army will never use force ......."”
Ruan, like Zhang, had some illusions, so he returned to the Beiyuan barracks, sent someone to contact the Japanese army, and asked the whole brigade to be converted into a security team. Ruan wanted to be a traitor, and he was not prepared to resist to the death at all.
On July 31, the Japanese army gave an ultimatum: disarm and discuss again! At this time, the Ruan Department had been surrounded and became a lone army unprepared, and more than 6,000 people in the brigade were disarmed and handed over all the best equipment. Subsequently, all officers and soldiers were dismissed. Later generations once said: "Shameless people who want to be lackeys are not qualified enough." ”
After being dismissed, Ruan went to Chongqing via Hong Kong, where he worked as a staff officer and logistician before settling in Shanghai in 1948. He died in 1986. History
