Liverpool are on the shortlist for a four man sporting director, but Jim could spoil the plans

In addition to a new manager, Liverpool need a new sporting director, and given Sir Jim Ratcliffe's influence, United could make their plans even more difficult.

Liverpool could be thwarted by Manchester United in their search for a new sporting director.

As well as succeeding Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool also face the crucial task of finding a new sporting director. Jörg Schmattke's responsibilities came to an end with the closing of the transfer window in January.

The former goalkeeper oversaw the signings of Dominic Szoboszley, Ryan Gravenberg and Wataru Endo at Anfield after his appointment less than a year ago, when he replaced Julian Ward. After Michael Edwards' departure in 2022, the Reds are looking to find longer-term stability after the change of positions.

Edwards is one of the people considered by Liverpool's hierarchy. The former Liverpool captain's return is considered unlikely, but it is not ruled out that he has been with the club for 11 years and is highly regarded by Fenway Sports Group.

However, he is not the only contender for this role. Bournemouth's Richard Hughes has stepped down as the Cherries' first-team technical director at the end of the season.

Newcastle United have also been linked with Hughes given their relationship with Eddie Howe as they look to replace Dan Ashworth. The transfer director is currently on leave and United are looking to lure him to Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe may not have done much to thwart the Reds' opponents. Another figure on Liverpool's roster is Florent Gisolfi, which could pose a problem.

Given that INEOS owns a Ligue 1 club, the transfer of the Nice sporting director could be even more difficult. Ratcliffe may be reluctant to approve such a move because he bought Manchester United 277% of the shares.

The Reds could also target former AC Milan chairman Frédéric Massara. The 55-year-old has not played for any club since leaving the Serie A side with Paolo Maldini at the end of 2023 due to tensions with owner Gerry Cardinal over the future of the club.

Whoever takes on the role will face a daunting task, with Liverpool aiming for a stable transition in Jurgen Klopp's absence. Although the club has faced challenges on four fronts this season and has had to make a number of big decisions quickly, it has not been an easy task.

The club will of course need to appoint a new head coach, but the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold must also be addressed. Currently, all three have contracts that expire in 2025.
