German trade union Verdi on Tuesday called for airport security personnel to strike over stalled wage negotiations, leading to the cancellation of passenger flights at Hamburg airport on Thursday, and Frankfurt airport may only transport passengers who have already transited, Reuters reported.
The union said in a statement on Tuesday that there will be a general strike on Thursday in the passenger and cargo control areas, cargo control areas and service areas at both airports.
Hamburg Airport said all passenger flights would be cancelled of the 141 flights scheduled to depart on Thursday.
As previously reported, the German trade union Verdi called on Lufthansa ground staff for a three-day strike. The strike is expected to take place from February 28 to March 1, and no flight cancellations are expected. Employees of subsidiaries such as Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Technical Training have been urged to join the strike, the union said.
A Lufthansa spokesperson said: "We do not believe that the three-day strike campaign planned by Verdi will have a significant impact on Lufthansa's flight schedules. It is reported that the strike was launched after collective bargaining between the company and the union.
