At the time of the accident, a SafariLink Airlines DHC-8-300 (registration number 5Y-SLK) was taking off from Nairobi Wilson Airport and was scheduled to operate flight F2-53 from Nairobi Wilson to Diani. During the take-off and climb of the aircraft, the crew reported hearing a loud bang and the flight made an emergency return to Wilson Airport in Kenya.
The aircraft returned safely to land, and post-landing investigations revealed that the aircraft had collided with a single-engine Cessna 172 (registration number 5Y-NNJ) in mid-air. It is reported that the Cessna 172 aircraft, which belongs to the 99 Flying Club, was conducting a training flight at the time and subsequently crashed in the Nairobi National Park area, killing two passengers.
The Safarilink flight was carrying 39 passengers and five crew members, and no injuries were reported, the report said.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement confirming the incident, saying: "The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that there was an aircraft accident at 10:05 on the same day, involving a Cessna aircraft from 99 Flight School and a SafariLink Airlines DASH 8 aircraft. The Kenya Aviation Accident Investigation Department (AAID) and the Kenya National Police have begun an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. ”
