The Attorney General's Office has appealed to the Federal Court on Thursday (7th) after the Malaysian Court of Appeal acquitted former Federal Land Development Authority (ULAND) chairman Mohd Isa on Wednesday (March 6) of his appeal for RM3.09 million (S$880,000) for the purchase of a hotel**.

Attorney General Ahmad Triruddin told ** that the prosecution had filed a notice of appeal on Thursday in response to Wednesday's judgment of the Court of Appeal.

In February 2021, the Kuala Lumpur High Court convicted Isa of nine counts** of RM3.09 million (about S$875,000) in the purchase of a hotel in Sarawak. The penalty is six years' imprisonment on each charge, which runs concurrently, and a fine of RM15.45 million. Isa then appealed.

The three divisions of the Court of Appeal, headed by Judge Watter, unanimously overturned the High Court's verdict on Wednesday. In reading out the verdict, Wa Zhe said that in the ** statement, the prosecution stated that the money was paid for Isha's approval of the purchase of the hotel, but during the trial, the prosecution alleged that the bribe giver used the money to induce Isa not to interfere with the hotel sales contract.

Based on the principle that the interests of doubts belong to the defendants, the three divisions agreed to overturn the high court's verdict and change the verdict to acquit Yisha, Wazhe said.

Isa is charged with contravening section 16(a)(a) of the Anti-Commission Act 2009 and can be sentenced under section 24(1) of the same section. If convicted, the offender is liable to imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine of at least five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
