Autumn is the season of sweet potatoes and the season for us to enjoy delicious food. During this season, whether it's in a bustling city supermarket or a quiet rural market, you'll see people rushing to buy sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are loved by the public because of their soft and sweet taste and rich nutritional value. It can not only be processed into sweet potato flour, sweet potato noodles, and delicious sweet potato pastries, but it can also be cooked in various ways such as baking, boiling, steaming, and frying to meet the needs of various tastes.
The preservation of sweet potatoes has always been a major problem for urban residents. In the countryside, cellars are a great way to extend the shelf life of sweet potatoes, but in the cities, such traditions have faded away. Therefore, many sweet potato lovers do not dare to buy too many sweet potatoes at one time, so as not to cause waste. Today, I'm going to share some tips for preserving sweet potatoes so that they don't spoil or sprout for half a year.
We need to understand the conditions for sweet potato germination: temperature, light and humidity. Temperature is the key to sweet potato germination, the optimal temperature range is 5 degrees to 15 degrees, below 0 degrees may cause frostbite, and above 15 degrees it is easy to cause germination. Sunlight is a catalyst for sweet potatoes to sprout, so in order to maintain the freshness of sweet potatoes, we need to reduce the light during storage, which can be covered with a blackout cloth. Humidity is the main cause of rotting or germination of sweet potatoes, so we need to ensure that the humidity of the storage environment is appropriate to maintain the freshness of sweet potatoes.
Next, I will share two simple and easy ways to preserve sweet potatoes: carton preservation and plastic bag preservation.
The carton preservation method requires us to select sweet potatoes that are intact and free of mechanical wounds, bumps or mildew. Then, place the sweet potatoes in a well-ventilated area to dry for 1 to 3 days. Finally, put the sweet potatoes in a milk box or shoebox, spread a towel, add an appropriate amount of salt, and seal the box. This method allows sweet potatoes to stay for half a year.
Plastic bag preservation methodWe wrap the sweet potatoes in toilet paper to ensure that they are completely wrapped. Then, place the wrapped sweet potatoes in a dark plastic bag to block out the light. Finally, make sure that the mouth of the bag is tightly closed and does not allow air to circulate. This method can also keep sweet potatoes for half a year without spoiling.
As long as we have the right way to store them, we don't have to worry about the sweet potatoes going to waste by buying too much. Hopefully, the above sharing can help you to keep your sweet potatoes fresh and delicious all the time. If you find these methods useful, be sure to share them with your friends!
