The Abyei region, which covers an area of about 10,000 square kilometres, is an oil-rich region and a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan. In June 2011, the UN Security Council decided to establish the United Nations Security Force (UNISF) to oversee the withdrawal of Sudan and South Sudan from the Abyei region. On January 1, local time, former Sudanese transitional prime minister Hamdok held talks with Sudanese Rapid Support Forces leader Dagalo in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to discuss matters such as ending the armed conflict in Sudan and promoting the political process in Sudan.
A few days ago, Hamdok sent letters to Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to Burhan and Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Dagalo, calling on the two sides to hold an urgent meeting to end the armed conflict as soon as possible.
Armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in the capital, Khartoum, on 15 April 2023, and the conflict has since spread to other parts of Sudan and continues to this day. Djibouti's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Youssef said a few days ago that Djibouti, as the current chair of the Organization for Inter-African Development (IGAD), will host the meeting between Burhan and Dagalo in the first week of 2024.
